El Niño, a climate phenomenon marked by warmer than average sea temperatures, arrived in June just after the start of hurricane season.
While this typically means a quieter season, experts say this may not be the case. Over the last decade, US coastlines have experienced drastic growth, resulting in a more than 70% increase in home values and a 60% rise in reconstruction costs (El Niño’s Promise of Quieter Hurricane Season May Not Guarantee Good News for Insurers, 2026). With this level of coastal expansion, just one landfalling hurricane could lead to severe losses.
