SATURDAY BEACH FILL UPDATE: PROJECT IS ONE THIRD COMPLETED, PRODUCTION RATES HIGH ON SAND VOLUME

The Avalon beach fill project remains ahead of schedule. Over the past 24 hours, 39,683 cubic yards of sand have been placed on Avalon's north end beaches, bringing the total volume for the project to 331,949. The 10-13th street beach paths are closed today. The walking path behind the dunes is open for easy access to an open beach. All over beaches in Avalon remain open to the public. The Avalon Beach Patrol is on duty today. Follow all safety instructions provided by Norfolk Dredging and lifeguards.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH UPDATE: NEARLY 300,000 CUBIC YARDS OF NEW SAND ON AVALON'S BEACHES

The dredge "Delaware" placed an additional 39,000 cubic yards of sand on Avalon's beaches during the past day. The total volume of sand is now at 277,064 cubic yards, or more than four times the amount of sand Avalon moves during a typical back passing project. Only the 12-13th street beach paths are closed to the public. The walking area behind the dunes remains open. There have been no safety issues associated with the project. All other beaches in Avalon remain open. The Avalon Beach Patrol will be on duty again Saturday and Sunday as they conclude their service for the summer season.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD: BEACH FILL VOLUME INCREASES, 20TH STREET PATH OPEN, EQUIPMENT AREA TIGHTENED UP

The Avalon hydraulic beach fill product enters its third day with 15,575 cubic yards of sand placed on the beach adjacent to 13th and 14th streets. The “Delaware” is staged in Townsend’s Inlet and is pumping a slurry of seawater and sand onto the beach to create a large sand pad that will be part of the beach and permit operational maneuverability. Norfolk Dredging and the Avalon Beach Patrol continue to work together to keep the public out of the immediate work zone; all other beaches in Avalon remain open. The 20th Street beach path has been reopened to the public with a designated area for pedestrians to walk. Do not walk on the section of the path reserved for vehicles and equipment. Additionally, efforts have been made to consolidate the equipment storage area on the beach at 8-9th streets (see photo). Those beach paths remain open. Parents, please monitor your children so they do not encounter any of the equipment. The beach fill continues 24 hours a day until it ends in mid-October including through Labor Day weekend.

ARMY CORPS: AVALON BEACHFILL TO BEGIN IN EARLY SEPTEMBER, LAST THROUGH MID-OCTOBER

Avalon will receive a federally funded beach fill project that will begin on or about September 5th and end on or about October 12th. A $15.7 million contract was awarded to Norfolk Dredging for the work that will restore severely eroded beaches from approximately 9th Street south to 25th Street. The 20th Street beach path will be used to bring equipment on to Avalon's beaches starting sometime next week. All beaches in Avalon will remain open during the work; only 1,000 feet of beach in the immediate fill area will be closed. The project will move north to south. The work occurs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and stops only for rough seas or mechanical issues. Updates continue at www.avalonboro.net.

MAJOR WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT COMING TO 42ND STREET, NEIGHBORING STREETS

Avalon has awarded a contract to South State Inc. to replace the water main along 42nd Street west of Ocean Drive and along neighboring streets. Work will begin in September 2026 in generally the numerical sequential order depicted on the map. The work will result in greatly improved water service to the neighborhoods along with emergency response, newly paved streets, and ADA compliant access.
