What you need to know about FINCEN, the new real estate reporting rule 🏠

🚨 NEW REAL ESTATE REPORTING RULE STARTED MARCH 1, 2026 🚨

There’s been a lot of conversation around the new FINCEN Real Estate Reporting Rule, so here’s the quick breakdown for Maine buyers and sellers 👇

🏡 This rule mainly applies when:
• A residential property (1–4 units) is purchased
• The purchase is made with cash or private financing
• The buyer is purchasing through an LLC, Trust, or other entity

📋 In those situations, ownership information and the source of funds may need to be reported.

⚖️ Important:
• The title company or attorney typically files the report
• Most standard transactions are NOT affected

This rule is designed to increase transparency in real estate transactions, but for the majority of buyers and sellers the process will remain business as usual.
