25 years ago today, I was teaching 7th grade at 𝙱𝙴𝙰𝚄𝙵𝙾𝚁𝚃 𝙰𝙲𝙰𝙳𝙴𝙼𝚈 when our world changed forever.

I remember stepping out of my classroom, desperately making calls to find out if my brother and my cousin at the Pentagon were safe. I remember Eric said he was sitting at the dining room table as we watched the unimaginable unfold on television—an airplane flying into the World Trade Center. The fear and uncertainty of that morning are memories that have never left me.

Today, Sandy Turcotte reminded me of something I had forgotten. She arrived at Beaufort Academy that morning and saw Mrs. Booth and Mrs. Collins gathered with the second graders around the flagpole, praying the Lord’s Prayer. Sandy walked into the office and simply asked how she could help—and ended up stepping into my classroom to care for my students while I was with my family.

Twenty-five years later, that brought tears to my eyes.

9/11 changed the way we lived, traveled, and saw the world. But amid the fear and unimaginable loss, I also remember how we showed up for one another. We prayed together. We helped each other. We held our families a little tighter.

Today, I remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders who ran toward danger.

I will never forget where I was. And thanks to Sandy, today I remember a little more of the love that surrounded us, too.
