Fall is doing what Birmingham does best: giving families easy reasons to get out. Here’s what’s on our calendar over the next couple of weeks:
🎡 Alabama State Fair — Fri, Sept 18–Sun, Sept 27 at Birmingham Race Course. Midway, fair food, shows, and that first-of-fall glow. Kids 4 & under free; parking is free. Hours: Fri 4–11, Sat 12–11, Sun 12–10, Mon–Thu 4–10. Details: alabamastatefair.com
🦕 Dino Safari at the Birmingham Zoo — through Nov 1, Wed–Sun. Life-size dinos plus the rest of the Zoo. Included with regular admission.
🦥 Survival of the Slowest at McWane — ongoing. Live sloth encounters and hands-on science downtown. Included with McWane admission.
🌿 Fall Plant Sale at Birmingham Botanical Gardens — Fri, Sept 18, noon–5:30 p.m. and Sat, Sept 19, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Public, free to browse. Bring a wagon. Members shop earlier Friday morning.
💙 Head Over Teal Family Fun Day — Sat, Sept 19 at The Preserve in Hoover. 5K/10K in the morning, then fall activities, food, and family fun. Race registration is separate; check runsignup.com for details.
🥕 Pepper Place Farmers Market — Saturday mornings, 7 a.m.–noon. Alabama growers, baked goods, music. A classic start to the weekend.
🛍️ Magic City Pop-Up Plaza — Fri, Sept 25, 4–7 p.m. at Railroad Park’s 17th Street Plaza. Free. Local makers and food trucks.
🧺 Picnic at Railroad Park — Sun, Sept 27, 1–5 p.m. Free community picnic with live music, kids’ activities, and food vendors.
