🍁 FALL COLOR REPORT: BLOWING ROCK TO LINVILLE FALLS NEARING PEAK THIS WEEKEND

Dr. Neufeld's latest fall color report is in, and the High Country's best color is headed toward peak just in time for the weekend.

🍂 BEST COLOR NOW: Color is much more advanced between Blowing Rock and Linville Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where sourwood and sugar maples are adding to the show. Neufeld expects colors to approach peak this weekend and continue into the following week. He thinks the best color above 3,000 feet will come over the next 10 days, before it begins moving into the foothills.

🌳 FARTHER NORTH: On Wednesday he drove the Parkway north to the Virginia border and found that stretch still mostly green. Red maples and black gums are coming along, and ash, tulip poplar and birches are yellowing, but the oaks need about 10 more days. He says there is still enough color in places to justify a trip.

🌬️ WEATHER: Neufeld says rain and blustery winds are forecast Friday night, with gusts up to 45 mph, and a similar outlook Saturday with a 70% chance of rain. Monday and Tuesday look drier but still windy. The outlook for Wednesday into next weekend is cool, sunny and less windy, which he calls perfect for viewing the leaves.

🍁 THE LINN COVE VIADUCT IS "POKING AT PEAK"

Fall color is putting on a show along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Grandfather Mountain. Joe Dombrosky captured the Linn Cove Viaduct on Tuesday as it curves through hillsides of red, orange and yellow, with a bright blue sky overhead.

📸 "Looking like we're poking at peak on the Linn Cove Viaduct," Dombrosky said.

🍂 Reds and oranges are already glowing among the maples and shrubs along the roadside, while the ridges behind the viaduct still hold plenty of green, so there is more color on the way.

Grandfather Mountain Daily Fall Color Report | Oct. 9, 2026:

Splashes of color illuminate the landscape around Stack Rock Creek Bridge at Milepost 304.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great news for leaf lookers, out of the 469 total miles of America’s Favorite Scenic Drive, 458 miles are now open.

The weather is cloudy but beautiful today. Conditions are expected to change this weekend as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias move into the area.
