The center portion of The Elms dates to 1844, when built as Lambert Spencer's Home. The two hexagonal wings were added in 1868. The Columbus home is also known for it's butterfly-shaped gardens.

This 1928 home in Atlanta's Peachtree Heights Park has had incredibly interesting owners over the years! James (J.G.) and Grace Ison moved into the home in 1928. He ran a finance business and was a well-known amateur golfer. Grace was a talented soprano, and quite the hostess. In 1929, she gave a tea party at the house and had 200 friends over for the occasion!

The house sold in 1937 for $20,000 to William and Emily Hammond, who lived in the house for decades (he died at age 86 in 1975, she lived to be 104 years old). He led engineering work at Georgia Power, and in the 1950s Plant Hammond near Rome was named in recognition of his decades of service to Georgia Power. Emily grew up in Mobile, Alabama and was a graduate of the University of Montevallo.
