The Haman and Lidia Bordner Home is under contract.

Haman and Lidia had their names cut into a sandstone date stone in 1880, back when this was a working farm. The farm became West Manor. The house stayed put and the neighborhood grew up around it. It's been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

I went to Perry, and I'd driven past this house for years without knowing any of that. Piecing its story together from the deeds, old newspaper clippings, a family genealogy and a set of negatives found on the property has been some of my favorite work in 19 years of selling houses.

Thank you to everyone who came through the open houses, shared the video, or passed the listing along. A lot of you did, and it mattered.

It isn't closed yet, so I'll save the rest for closing day. For now: 146 years in, a new chapter is coming.

Something that trips up buyers around North Canton all the time: ZIP codes 44720 and 44721 cover parts of both North Canton and Plain Township. Same ZIP code, but a different school district and a different tax bill. On a $200,000 home the gap is about $592 a year.

Zillow and Realtor.com won't always sort that out for you. The Stark County Auditor's parcel lookup will. Check the taxing district before you assume which side of the line a house sits on.

Here's something odd about Hartville. It's a village of about 3,300 people, but the Marketplace, Hartville Kitchen, and Hartville Hardware pull in more than three million visitors a year between them. That's why a town this size carries the retail base and the Saturday traffic it does.
