Interesting history🌞

Carrabelle, FL

The origin of the name Carrabelle isn't known with complete certainty, but there are two main stories:

The most widely accepted story is that the town was originally called Rio Carrabella, which was said to mean "beautiful river." Early records and local history repeat this explanation, although historians aren't sure that "Carrabella" was ever an authentic Spanish phrase.
The local legend is a bit more personal. In 1877, Massachusetts farmer and land developer Oliver Hudson Kelley founded the settlement and is said to have named it after his niece, Caroline Arrabella Hall (sometimes shortened to "Carrabella"). Caroline later became the town's first postmistress when the post office opened in 1878. Over time, Rio Carrabella was shortened to simply Carrabelle.
