Pros and Cons of Living in Chandler, Arizona
What You Really Need to Know Before You Move
If you're weighing a move to Chandler, here's my honest take, the kind I'd give a friend over coffee, not a sales pitch.
Quick answer: Chandler is one of the East Valley's strongest choices for families and relocation buyers who want good schools, steady job growth, and a true four season desert lifestyle, but it comes with a higher price tag than nearby cities and summers that test your patience. Here's the full picture.
The Pros
A strong, diverse economy. Chandler is home to major employers like Intel, which anchors a tech and business hub with steady job opportunities across industries. If you're relocating for work or want a market with real staying power, that matters.
Excellent schools. Chandler Unified School District is consistently ranked among the top performing districts in Arizona, which is often the number one deciding factor for the families I work with.
Almost 300 days of sunshine a year. If you're coming from somewhere gray and cold, this alone changes your quality of life. Hiking, golf, patio dinners, morning walks, most of the year you get to actually live outside.
Real outdoor life, not just a slogan. Chandler has an abundance of parks, golf courses, and trail access, and it puts you close to some of my favorite hiking spots in the Valley. This is the lifestyle piece I love showing people before we even talk about square footage.
Low crime, high safety. Chandler consistently scores well on safety compared to national averages, which brings real peace of mind for families and retirees.
A range of home types and price points. You'll find everything from established neighborhoods to brand new construction with builder incentives, especially as you move toward the newer pockets of the East Valley.
Family friendly, laid back feel. Downtown Chandler has restaurants, retail, and things to do, but the overall pace is suburb, not city. People are out walking, at the park, at their kids' games.
The Cons
It's not the cheapest East Valley city. Chandler's median home price has hovered in the mid $500,000s through 2026, which is noticeably higher than what you'll find in San Tan Valley or parts of Mesa and Queen Creek. It's a fair trade for the schools and amenities, but it's worth knowing going in.
Summer is intense. Triple digit heat for a good stretch of the year is real. Locals adapt (pools help, a lot), but it's something to plan for if you've never lived in a hot climate.
Traffic and growth. Chandler has grown fast, and that means more cars, more construction, and longer commutes during peak times than it had a decade ago.
HOAs are common. Many Chandler neighborhoods, especially newer ones, come with an HOA. Great for keeping the community polished, but it's a monthly cost and a rulebook to know about upfront.
Less nightlife than Phoenix or Tempe. If you want a big city, late night scene, Chandler isn't that. It's a quieter, family first kind of place.
Who Chandler Is Best For
In my experience, Chandler is a great fit for relocating families and professionals who want strong schools and safety, buyers who want established neighborhoods with mature landscaping, and anyone who wants to be close to jobs, freeways, and everyday convenience without sacrificing that desert, outdoor lifestyle.
If your budget is closer to $400k to $500k, I'll usually point you toward new construction in San Tan Valley or parts of Queen Creek instead, and we can talk through that too.
