😒🥜South Carolina peanut farmers are facing one of their toughest seasons in decades. A combination of severe drought, soaring fertilizer and fuel costs, and rising operating expenses has created what many are calling a “perfect storm” for family farms across the state.
With South Carolina experiencing its worst drought since 1895, many farmers are struggling just to plant this season because dry soil conditions are preventing seeds from properly germinating. At the same time, fertilizer prices have jumped nearly 50%, diesel fuel costs continue to rise, and high interest rates on operating loans are putting even more pressure on already tight margins.
In 2025 alone, South Carolina row crop farmers saw losses of more than $325 million, with total losses exceeding $700 million over the past two years. Lawmakers warn that without meaningful relief, many small family farms could be forced to shut down permanently.
The South Carolina Senate has advanced a relief package of up to $50 million to help keep family farms operating, but many believe more long-term solutions will still be needed.
Agriculture remains a major part of South Carolina’s economy and heritage, and many communities are watching closely as farmers fight to protect both their livelihoods and the future of family farming.
