Downsizing isn't a logistics problem.
It's an emotional problem wearing a logistics costume.
I've stood in that kitchen, with that family, wrestling with those emotions. Forty years of Sunday dinners. A coffee maker older than some of my clients' kids. A recliner where dad watched every St. Louis Cardinals game for two decades.
And an adult child standing in the middle of it all... holding a cardboard box... trying to figure out where forty years of a life is supposed to go.
Here's what I know after doing this work:
The families who struggle most aren't the ones with the most stuff. They're the ones who moved too fast. Who pushed too hard. Who forgot that asking a parent to let go of an item can feel like asking them to let go of the story attached to it.
Slow down on purpose. Let them choose... even the small stuff. One room. One day. That's enough.
A parent who feels included will cooperate. A parent who feels managed will resist. Every time.
