The Northside House Tour showcases the diversity and unique beauty of the neighborhood that’s been dubbed “a casually hip destination” by The New York Times, and “the It Girl of Cincinnati neighborhoods” by Cincinnati Magazine.

Since its start in 1990, the Northside House Tour has delighted thousands of Cincinnati-area residents with tours of private homes in this vibrant and thriving community. Every other year up to a dozen homes, chosen for architectural integrity, unique design and personal flair, have their doors thrown open in this nonprofit, volunteer-run event held with support from the Northside Community Council.

Tickets are $15/advance and $20/door, and can be purchased online at northsidehousetour.com or in person at CAINCincy, Happen, Inc., Lierer's Market, Northside Farmers Market, North Side Bank & Trust, Ruth's Parkside Cafe, and Shake It Records.

Have you explored the Wasson Way yet?

Built primarily on a former railroad corridor and city rights-of-way, the Wasson Way is a multipurpose bicycle, running and pedestrian trail that provides a safe, accessible and scenic route through several vibrant Cincinnati neighborhoods, including Evanston, Norwood, Oakley, and Hyde Park.

Right now, the trail spans approximately 4.3 miles, from Old Red Bank Rd. near Ault Park at the eastern end, through Xavier University’s campus, and to Blair Court in Avondale.

The trail is a cornerstone of the CROWN Cincinnati (Cincinnati Riding or Walking Network), a planned 34-mile urban loop designed to link more than 356,000 residents across Cincinnati to parks, schools, business districts, and regional destinations like the Little Miami Scenic Trail.

This summer, my Sage Real Estate and Property Management colleague Laura and I participated in the half Tour de Crown, a community bike ride organized by Tri-State Trails. The event showcased existing and future trails throughout the expanding CROWN.

We enjoyed exploring some of the region’s most-loved trails, including the Little Miami Scenic Trail, Lunken Airport Loop, Delta Avenue Bikeway, Wasson Way, and Murray Path.

As licensed real estate agents, this also gave us a glimpse into the many communities that benefit from this enhanced connectivity, as well as the ones that will become more connected as the network expands. Are you familiar with kit homes? Once upon a time, you could order a house kit from a catalog, have it shipped by train and build it on your lot for the ultimate DIY.

Sears, Roebuck and Co. was one of the companies that offered this option, selling almost 450 different house plans through its mail-order catalogs between 1908 and 1940. By 1930, there were 3,000 Sears homes in the Cincinnati area!

How many remain? That’s a bit of a mystery. Sears destroyed all sales records in a corporate housecleaning and, after 100 years of home alterations, authentication can be a challenge. There was never a “typical” Sears house. The company encouraged buyers to customize the plans, and competitors offered many lookalikes. Buyers could even design their own homes and submit the blueprints to Sears, which would then deliver a one-off kit of pre-cut and fitted materials, putting the home owner in full creative control.

There are many resources and an active online community to aid in the identification of Sears kit houses. This craftsman-style house in Clifton has been verified. It is the Ashmore model built in 1924 (the last year this model was offered).

To verify a Sears kit house, you typically need blueprints or property records. If you have interior access, look for Sears markings on framing lumber. In this case, a County record confirms that the building materials for the home came from Norwood Sash and Door, a Sears-owned company at the time.

Have you been shopping at your local farmers’ market? Right now is the peak of the growing season in Greater Cincinnati, and our local markets are bursting with farm-fresh fruits and veggies.

You probably already know that farmers’ markets offer food that’s unrivaled in taste and freshness, but they offer undeniable economic benefits as well. A recent UC Davis study revealed that, for every $1 million in revenue, direct-market farms create almost 32 local jobs whereas larger wholesale growers create only 10.5.

Food at the farmers market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using methods that minimize the impact on the earth. Customers also benefit from access to a greater variety of minimally processed foods, more diverse produce, and the freshest produce available.

Meeting and talking to farmers and food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced, and how to prepare it.

Is buying a condo better than buying a house? It really depends on your situation and exactly what you’re looking for, but here are some points to consider.

Condos are often more affordable than single-family homes and can be a good point of entry into homeownership, as well as an economical option in sought-after neighborhoods.

Budgeting is usually simpler. A condo owner is only responsible for the interior maintenance of the home, while HOA fees cover exterior maintenance, common areas, elevator, landscaping, snow removal, trash pickup, and paving. The homeowner’s insurance is typically lower as well.

Condos are often smaller than single-family homes, making them a great option for smaller households and people who prefer to live streamlined lives.

Many people find condos to be more secure than single-family homes. This may be especially a consideration if you frequently travel.

Your condo building or complex may include amenities like a pool, playground, fitness center, dog park, lounge, or door attendant. Some even offer guest suites and party spaces!

Cincinnati’s most densely populated neighborhoods, like downtown and Over-the-Rhine, offer many condo options, but you can find them scattered all over the city. Walk with me through Over-the-Rhine!

In the 19th century, immigrants from Rhineland, the section of Western Germany along the Rhine River, started settling just north of downtown Cincinnati, crossing the canal (now Central Parkway) to work in area factories. The canal was nicknamed “the Rhine,” and this newly settled area north of the canal became known as “Over the Rhine.”

Once a working-class German neighborhood, OTR is now a trendy enclave that’s home to hip restaurants, bars, boutiques, and breweries, as well as major cultural institutions like the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Founded in 1852, Findlay Market is the oldest continuously operated public market in Ohio. Open year-round, you can find merchants selling meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli, and specialty foods. Adjacent to the market, the cookware boutique Artichoke also offers cooking classes.

Wander south for more shopping, eating and exploration. The neighborhood is home to some of the best restaurants in town, like Young Buck Delicatessen!

Our stroll ends in Washington Park and its backdrop of Cincinnati Music Hall, the 1878 Samuel Hannaford-designed masterpiece that’s considered one of the most beautiful concert theaters in the world.
