Your home should tell YOUR story. Not look like everyone else’s. 💚

One of my favorite things about interior design is finding creative ways to bring personality into a space.

I absolutely love design books! They inspire me, challenge my creativity, and reflect something I’m passionate about.

Instead of hiding my collection away on a bookshelf, I decided to turn it into a unique little feature in my office. A stack of books becomes a side table, topped with flowers and surrounded by colors and patterns I love.

Is it traditional? No. But that’s what makes it special to me!

Creating a home that feels like you doesn’t mean following trends or decorating by the rules. It’s about finding meaningful ways to incorporate the things you love into your everyday spaces.

Your hobbies, collections, travels, memories, and passions all have a place in your home. Sometimes you just need to think a little differently about how to display them.

Because the most beautiful homes aren’t necessarily the ones that look perfect. They’re the ones that feel personal.

Not every empty space needs something!

One of the most overlooked principles of design is negative space.

It’s what allows your favorite pieces to shine, creates visual balance, and gives your eyes a place to rest.

Intentional design isn’t about how much you can fit into a space. It’s about making thoughtful choices about what belongs there.

Are you someone who loves filling every surface, or do you prefer a little breathing room?

One of the most common mistakes I see? Artwork hung too high!

The right placement can make a room feel more balanced, intentional, and pulled together.

And when you’re hanging art above furniture, the relationship between the two matters just as much as the height!

Small adjustments can make a BIG difference.

From a kids’ playroom to a space designed for rest, reflection and slowing down.

With their kids grown and moved out, my clients were ready to completely rethink how this room could serve them now.

We transformed it into a meditation and relaxation space, somewhere to recharge, meditate, or simply rest when sleep isn’t coming.

But this transformation went far beyond decorating.

We moved the doorway to accommodate the custom daybed, widened one opening and closed another, replaced the flooring and light fixtures, and covered the walls and ceiling in limewash to create a more enveloping feeling.

Custom shelving was designed around the existing windows, with a sliding panel that allows them to be concealed when desired. We added a custom light feature for another layer of ambient lighting and finished the room with intentional art, plants and minimal styling.

Every detail had a purpose.

And hearing one of the homeowners say, “This is the best room in the house,” made all of those details worth it.

This is what I love about design, taking a space that no longer serves the people living there and imagining what else it could become.

SOULFUL DESIGN. 💙

Sometimes you look around your home and realize…

This doesn’t feel like me anymore.

Maybe you’ve changed.

Your kids have grown. Your lifestyle is different. Your priorities have shifted. You’ve traveled, collected things you love, discovered your style and become a different version of yourself.

But somehow, your home still reflects who you used to be.

That’s where Soulful Design comes in.

I believe your home should tell your story.

The art that means something to you.
The pieces you’ve collected over the years.
The colors you’re naturally drawn to.
The things that remind you of people, places and moments you love.

Not a perfectly matched furniture set.

Not a room copied from Pinterest.

A home with character, meaning and pieces of you woven throughout it.

Because when your surroundings reflect who you are and the life you’re creating, home feels different.

It feels personal.

It feels intentional.

It feels like a place where you can thrive.

MINDFUL LIVING. 🌿

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt calmer?

Or walked into another and felt overwhelmed without really knowing why?

Our environments affect us.

The lighting. The clutter. The colors. The way a room flows. Where we gather. Where we rest. Even whether we have a place to simply be still.

That’s why I think about more than how a room looks.

I think about how you need that room to make you feel and how it needs to support your life.

Maybe you need a bedroom that helps you slow down at the end of the day.

A living room that brings your family together.

A home that functions better so everyday life feels a little less chaotic.

Or simply a space where you can breathe.

Because beautiful design shouldn’t just be something you look at.

It should make your life better.

That’s Mindful Living and it’s another part of creating a home where you can thrive. 💚

ARTFUL HOMES. 🎨

Your home shouldn’t look like it came straight off a showroom floor.

It should feel collected. Interesting. Personal.

Original art. Pieces from your travels. Something you’ve owned for 20 years. Natural materials, texture, color, and furnishings chosen because they belong in your home, not because they came as a set.

I want to walk into your home and discover pieces of your story throughout it.

Because an artful home isn’t about following trends or having expensive things.

It’s about surrounding yourself with things you genuinely love and creating a home that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

That’s an Artful Home and it’s one part of creating a home where you can thrive. 💚

I came home from ICON with something I wasn’t expecting…clarity.

I’ve spent the last few days thinking about my business, where I want it to go, and more importantly, why I started AJ Design & Consulting in the first place.

And I keep coming back to this:

I want to create homes that capture the soul of the people who live there, who they are, who they’ve evolved into, and the life they’re creating next.

Because I truly believe our environments matter.

Where we live affects how we feel, how we function, how we connect with the people we love, and our overall quality of life.

That’s the kind of designer I want to be.

I create spaces that support your wellbeing, elevate your everyday life, and give you an environment where you can thrive.

And after a lot of reflection, I finally have the words for what I’ve been trying to build all along:

ARTFUL HOMES.
MINDFUL LIVING.
SOULFUL DESIGN.

And ultimately…

Finally picked this up last night, and I’m obsessed. 🤍
When our daughter graduated, we had this one-of-a-kind piece created by local artist Brett Morgan. Seeing it catch the natural light here just brings the whole space to life.
And this is what makes a home soulful to me.
It’s not about filling your space with perfectly coordinated things. It’s about surrounding yourself with pieces that tell your story.
This is the only one of its kind, representing such a special moment in our family that we’ll always cherish.
