Did you know Juneteenth might not be a federal holiday without the efforts of one remarkable woman?
Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Opal Lee spent decades educating others about Juneteenth and advocating for national recognition. At age 89, she even began a symbolic walk from Texas to Washington, D.C. to bring attention to the cause.
In 2021, her dream became reality when Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday.
Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we also honor Opal Lee and her commitment to preserving history for future generations. ❤️🖤💚
