We cannot expect our students to succeed if we refuse to give them the tools to do so.

When I became the principal at Compton High, I discovered that the computers meant for our ninth graders had been sitting in a district storage room for over two years. Our teachers were trying to teach computer literacy by pointing to pictures in textbooks. On top of that, the band program hadn't seen new instruments or uniforms in a quarter of a century.

This kind of systemic neglect breeds hopelessness. When schools are stripped of basic resources and extracurricular activities, students lose their motivation to learn, making them incredibly vulnerable to the desperate choices offered by the streets.

We fought back and secured a $5 million grant to get those computers and instruments onto our campus. But basic educational funding shouldn't require a miracle—it should be the standard.

What happens when the weekend playlist becomes the catalyst for Monday morning violence?

In The Compton Shuffle, I discuss the very real and immediate impact that extreme gangster rap and drill music have on our youth. During my time as a school principal, I saw this play out in our hallways constantly. A new track or music video would drop over the weekend, actively taunting a rival neighborhood. By Monday morning, that digital disrespect would spill over into physical altercations right in the middle of our school.

This specific subgenre of music has weaponized lyrics. When artists use their platforms to mock deceased rivals or glorify gang retaliation, it desensitizes our youth to the absolute tragedy of gun violence. It packages trauma as entertainment, and it convinces impressionable kids that this lifestyle is normal.

We cannot just confiscate their headphones and expect the problem to go away. We have to sit down and have honest conversations with our youth about the very real, devastating consequences of the lifestyle being sold to them over a beat.
