So I Live With My Parents

So I Live With My Parents My family of 4 joined households with my parents in 2021. We often have family events together both at home at around town, which helps keep all of us engaged.

A Positive Case Study on Multigenerational Living: Creating a lasting family legacy while enjoying an affordable housing solution and the benefits of a strong support system. We built a home where my parents have their own section of the house, so they can be completely independent, but we see each other every day. During the years of living together, the additional benefits of living in a shared household have been surprisingly numerous, so I want to share those successes with you.

🏡 Simplifying Life Through Communal Areas in Multigenerational Homes

One of the most powerful benefits of multigenerational living is how well‑designed communal areas and shared household items can make daily life easier for everyone. Using shared spaces intentionally isn’t just a design choice—it’s a lifestyle choice. It helps families move through the day more efficiently and encourages healthy, respectful habits across generations.

When families create intuitive shared spaces—with items that everyone can access, use responsibly, and return to their place—the home becomes easier to navigate, easier to maintain, and easier to enjoy.

When Everyone Contributes: Keeping Home Maintenance Organized in a Multigenerational Household

In multigenerational homes, the most effective maintenance systems are the ones everyone can participate in. It’s not just about having the right supplies—it’s about making those supplies visible, accessible, and easy for every family member to use.

When touch‑up paint, tools, and repair essentials are clearly labeled and stored in shared spaces, the home becomes something everyone feels responsible for—not just one person’s job to manage.

ADU's (Accessory Dwelling Units) continue to be significant enhancers for home values. Year over year, they tend to gain monetary value at a higher rate than traditional homes. Also, when it's time to sell the house, ADU's are a premium feature that and can increase appraisal values, sales prices, and they often sell faster.

Pets Thrive in Multigenerational Homes, Too 🐾

One of the unexpected joys of multigenerational living?
The way pets become cared for, loved, and supported by everyone under one roof. In a multigen household, there’s almost always someone home—someone to feed the dog, let the cat sunbathe on their lap, take the pup for a walk, or simply offer companionship throughout the day.

For pets, that consistency and connection make the home feel even more like theirs. The presence of multiple generations often brings both energy and stability—something pets pick up on and respond to beautifully.

Because it’s not just our home. It’s theirs, too.

🔥 Staying Safe & Warm in a Multigenerational Home Starts with One Thing: A Reliable HVAC System

When multiple generations share a home, comfort isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity for everyone’s health and well‑being. A properly functioning HVAC system keeps the entire household safe during extreme weather and helps maintain a healthy indoor environment.

Here are a few things I always recommend in multigen homes:
🔩 Prioritize preventative maintenance
Seasonal tune‑ups keep systems running safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of unexpected failures during the coldest weeks of the year.
🌡️ Design for zoned comfort
Zoning allows each part of the home—and each generation—to maintain the temperature that feels best for them.
🔧 Plan mechanical space intentionally
In multigen design, the HVAC system isn’t an afterthought. Clear access, serviceable placement, and appropriately sized equipment make a world of difference.
🍃 Support air quality, not just warmth
Good filtration, humidity control, and proper ventilation protect the health of seniors, kids, and everyone in between.

Winter is a good reminder that comfort systems are really safety systems—especially in homes built for multiple generations living together.

✨ Creating a Space for Shared Memories in a Multigenerational Home

One of the most meaningful parts of designing (or living in) a multigenerational home is creating a place where everyone’s stories meet.
Whether it’s a simple gallery wall, a curated shelf, or a full family archive nook, having a dedicated space to display shared memories does more than decorate a home—it connects generations.

📸 Photos that span decades
🎨 Kids’ artwork next to grandparents’ achievements
🗺️ Souvenirs from places visited together
📚 Keepsakes that carry family history

These shared displays become daily reminders of where we come from and the experiences we’re building together. They spark conversations, strengthen belonging, and turn a house into a living narrative.

As multigenerational living continues to grow, these intentional spaces matter more than ever. They honor individuality while celebrating togetherness—proof that a home is not just where we live, but where our stories live too.

PROPERTY TAXES = TWO THUMBS DOWN 👎👎

Excuse me while I rant… 😤

100% honesty: property taxes were the final straw that pushed us to finally decide to build our house and combine households. It wasn’t some glamorous HGTV moment or a heartwarming family epiphany. It was property taxes. 🏡💸

Our first home in Colorado? About $3k in property taxes with a mortgage under 3% APR. Fast‑forward to now: over $13k in property taxes and a mortgage above 7% APR. That’s not a small jump — that’s a whole different universe. 🚀💰

And it has me thinking… how are our fixed‑income parents supposed to keep up with this? 👵🧓 Have you checked on them lately? Are they quietly stressing about whether they can afford to stay in their homes because of rising property taxes?

Money can be a touchy subject, but it doesn’t have to be. Talk to your parents. Talk to your grown kids. ❤️ Find out if property taxes are contributing to their stress or possible housing insecurity. 🏠⚠️
