This itty bitty elk calf was one of the highlights of my morning! Just two mornings ago, I couldn’t find a single calf, and today this little one became number 13.

It’s such a special time of year. If you see a calf, just remember that mama elk are very protective of their little ones. I saw several vehicles get charged this morning, so giving them a little extra room helps keep everyone safe while enjoying these precious moments.

The Hermosa Cliff Fire is estimated at approximately one acre in size, burning north of Hermosa, CO and west of US 550 on the San Juan National Forest. This remote fire is burning above the Hermosa cliffs and is not currently threatening any values.

Air Attack, a small airplane providing fire oversight, is currently over the fire, and a Type 1 helicopter is en route. The helicopter will be dropping water on the fire this evening to slow the fire spread until firefighters can hike in from the nearest road to extinguish the fire. The fire's cause will be determined when firefighters arrive on scene.
