As part of Smith Village, the heart of Eden Prairie's beginning, we appreciate the history of our city but, also, we appreciate knowing about what lies ahead. This week, we had the opportunity to look in both directions.
On Tuesday, we stepped into the past with a tour of the J.R.Cummins House and the Eden Prairie Cemetery guided by Cathy Case, president of the Eden Prairie Historical Society … and, then, on Thursday, our minds turned to the future as City Manager Rick Getschow held a town hall meeting in our Great Room. His sessions are always informative and meaningful.

The near perfect weather enhanced the annual Memorial Day potluck gathering …. making it possible to dine on the patio and use the grills. Events with food always make for good attendance and potlucks are especially great because of the wide variety of contributions … from appetizers to salads … hot dishes to desserts … all are wonderful. Gathering around a meal makes for good conversation and fellowship.
At 3PM, taps were played by the flagpole (sorry but no photo of that, this year.)

Some good news and some sad news to share about our nesting mallards. First the sad news … the 1st nest was invaded and the clutch was lost. Good news - there was a second nest that had gone unnoticed until the hen was incubating her eggs. We never saw how many eggs she was sitting on but we knew they had hatched when 3 little ones peeked out from under her wings. Alas, they’re departure went unnoticed, too. More good news … at least the possibility of good news … another drake and hen were spotted “courting” in our pond. So keep a look-out for yet a 3rd nest.

Spring going on summer … when thoughts and activities turn to being outdoors … and the perfect time for the Applewood Pointe Grounds Committee to host a Spring Garden Fair. The Fair was a great way to re-acquaint residents with the many facets of that Committee’s responsibilties toward the care of our community. As members of the cooperative, we all contribute in one way or another to maintaining our grounds and building … certainly through our membership dues but also through volunteer work. Along with the informative displays and information, there were opportunities to win prizes and enjoy refreshments while chatting with neighbors. More than half of the membership participated in and/or attended the Fair .… a very good turnout.

The Apple Blossom Festival Open House held on May 6th was the first spring open house event held at Applewood Pointe Eden Prairie. Similar to our autumn Octoberfest Open House events, it provided an opportunity to acquaint people wth our Cooperative and provide them an opportunity to tour our building and a couple of occupied units. Many members of Applewood worked together to welcome visitors and answer questions which made this a successful event.

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" ... our first attempt at a progressive-type dinner ... had over half of our residents participating. To make it work for us, a modified version was created starting with all of the attendees gathering in the Great Room for the salad course. Then, the dinner portion was served in private units … tables for 6 in twelve units. After dinner, everyone returned to the Great Room for dessert, coffee and more conversation. The menu choices allowed for meals to be prepared ahead of time and packaged appropriately for the 12 hosts to take home and refrigerate until time to get dinner ready … proper reheating instructions were included. The event was deemed very successful and it is likely that this type of dining in small, private groups will be repeated.
