🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day from the Crystal Coast! 🌊Labor Day is a time to recognize the hardworking people who have built, strengthened and cared for our communities for generations.

Here on the Crystal Coast, that feels especially personal.

Our communities depend on so many hardworking people—fishermen heading out before sunrise, contractors working through the summer heat, teachers and first responders, healthcare workers, small business owners, restaurant and hospitality teams, landscapers, tradespeople, real estate professionals and so many others who keep our little stretch of the North Carolina coast moving.

They’re our friends, neighbors and family. They’re also a big part of what makes this place more than a beautiful destination. They make it home. 💙

So today, between the beach walks, boat rides, cookouts and a little well-earned rest, I’m especially grateful for the people who work hard every day to make the Crystal Coast such a special place to live.

In memory of Gloria Steinem — 1934–2026

Today I am deeply saddened by the loss of Gloria Steinem.

For more than six decades, she used her voice, her intelligence and an extraordinary amount of courage to challenge a world in which power had overwhelmingly belonged to men. She fought not to diminish men, but to make certain that women had an equal place beside them — with equal opportunity, equal freedom and an equal voice.

Women of my generation inherited freedoms and opportunities that can be easy to take for granted. Gloria Steinem helped make many of them possible. She questioned what society told women they should be and spent her life reminding us that we had every right to decide for ourselves.

Her passing leaves me with tremendous gratitude, but also with sadness and concern. It is difficult to imagine another person with her combination of courage, persistence and influence stepping forward to carry this fight.

And perhaps that is the lesson.

Maybe we shouldn’t wait for another Gloria Steinem.

Maybe the responsibility now belongs to all of us — to speak when something is unjust, to protect the progress generations of women fought to achieve, and to leave the door a little wider open for the women and girls coming behind us.

One of Gloria’s messages to activists seems especially meaningful today:

“Change comes from telling the truth and knowing that you’re not alone.” — Gloria Steinem

Thank you, Gloria, for telling the truth.
Thank you for refusing to accept inequality simply because it was customary.
And thank you for showing generations of women what can happen when we refuse to be silent.

May we be worthy of the ground you helped us gain. ❤️
