Labor Day looked a little different once upon a time.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, work was often long, difficult and sometimes performed by children much younger than we could imagine working today.

Labor Day was born during this era , a time when workers were fighting for better hours, safer conditions and greater recognition for the work that helped build America.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, and in 1894 it officially became a national holiday.

So while today may mean a long weekend, a barbecue or one last summer day by the pool, its history is really about the people behind the work.
