More about Argyle ISD boundary map and why.
Last August, I shared a very important explanation of the entire Argyle ISD boundary. As we begin a new school year, welcome new families, and reach more stakeholders, I want to take a moment to share once again.
📚 Understanding Argyle ISD’s Boundaries - Did you know?
I often find myself in conversations about Texas school district boundaries, and they can be quite confusing. Being informed is more powerful than being influenced. Here’s a quick breakdown specific to Argyle ISD:
✅ Argyle ISD covers a TOTAL of 35 square miles.
✅ Approximately 11.5 square miles of Argyle ISD is located within the Town of Argyle — about 33% of the district.
✅ The remainder of the district boundary includes portions of Northlake, Flower Mound, Denton, and Bartonville.
It’s easy to get confused — especially in fast-growth areas!
➡️ Some neighborhoods with Argyle mailing addresses are actually zoned for Northwest ISD (like Avalon).
➡️ Parts of Lantana with Argyle addresses belong to Denton ISD.
➡️ Harvest and Canyon Falls are split between Argyle and Northwest ISD.
➡️ Country Lakes is split between Argyle and Denton ISD.
➡️ Trailwood attends Argyle ISD with some Roanoke addresses.
🤔 Why is this?
School district boundaries were drawn many decades ago, based on old rural school zones rather than today’s modern-style neighborhoods and highway thoroughfare patterns.
School districts are independent from cities and counties — that's why they’re called “Independent School Districts!”
Boundaries don’t change easily — even when cities grow. Redrawing them is a rare, complex legal process.
Districts like Argyle ISD manage growth within the lines we have — but we don’t control or change those boundary lines.
🏛️ A Quick History Lesson
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Texas allowed towns to create their own independent school districts. This gave local communities control over their schools and tax rates. By 1900, there were 526 independent school districts in Texas! Today, there are just over 1,200 independent school districts in Texas.
