The I-77 South toll lane project may be dead, but the bill may not be.

According to Charlotte Stories, Charlotte taxpayers could potentially owe millions back to NCDOT after local leaders voted to kill the proposed toll lanes between Uptown Charlotte and the South Carolina state line.

The project would have added capacity along an 11-mile stretch of I-77. Supporters said it was needed to reduce congestion. Opponents pushed back over tolls, neighborhood impacts, and transparency.

Now, the bigger issue is what comes next.

If the region loses transportation funding or has to repay money already tied to the project, that affects more than just commuters. Roads, growth, housing, and economic development are all connected. When infrastructure decisions stall, the cost usually shows up somewhere.

For those of us living and working around Charlotte, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, Lake Wylie, and Rock Hill, I-77 is not just a highway. It is part of daily life.

Big news potentially coming for York County.

The former Panthers headquarters site in Rock Hill may be getting a second life, this time as part of a major biopharmaceutical project reportedly involving a $1.5 billion investment and more than 1,200 high-wage jobs.

If this moves forward, it could be one of the largest economic development wins York County has ever seen. A project like this would not just impact Rock Hill. It could affect Fort Mill, Tega Cay, Lake Wylie, Clover, York, and the broader Charlotte region through jobs, housing demand, infrastructure needs, and long-term growth.

Of course, the big question is transparency. York County is reportedly considering incentives connected to the project, and residents should have a clear understanding of what is being offered, what the return is expected to be, and how it impacts taxpayers.

From a real estate perspective, this is exactly why people keep paying attention to York County. Growth follows jobs, and high-wage jobs can reshape housing demand quickly.
