Bill 768 has passed in SC and will lower the age to 60 for seniors to take advantage of the Homestead tax benefit. Increased deduction to $100,000 from $50k.

“SC SENIOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION PASSES SENATE

Today, the South Carolina Senate voted to expand the homestead exemption for seniors across South Carolina, reducing the taxable value of their homes and delivering direct property tax relief. I was proud to support and cosponsor this legislation because it helps seniors stay in their homes and keeps more money in their pockets. This will make a real difference for the growing senior population in the 36th Senate District, where many residents live on fixed incomes and are especially vulnerable to rising costs.

Under this bill, the homestead exemption increases to $100,000 of a home’s value and lowers the eligibility age to 60 YEARS OLD, allowing more residents to qualify sooner and receive meaningful relief.

Senate Bill 768 is projected to cut property taxes by more than $250 million statewide. I appreciate the leadership of Finance Chairman Harvey Peeler and Senator Danny Verdin in moving this bill forward.

While this measure focuses on seniors, I agree with Chairman Peeler that we must continue working toward comprehensive tax reform that benefits every citizen. This is the first step in a broader effort to lower taxes and keep South Carolina affordable for all.

Honored to serve the good and decent people of the 36th Senate District.”

Town of Fort Mill Shares Important Update on South Carolina Golf Cart Laws

Fort Mill, S.C. — The Town of Fort Mill is informing residents about recent updates to South Carolina state law governing the registration, operation, and safety requirements for golf carts. These changes are designed to enhance safety and ensure compliance across communities statewide. Please note that the Town has not adopted a local ordinance regarding golf cart use at this time.

Registration & Permits
Golf cart owners are now required to register their carts through the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV). Owners must provide proof of ownership and insurance and pay a $5 registration fee. The permit decal issued by the SCDMV must be renewed every five years or when the owner's address changes.

Operator Requirements
Anyone operating a golf cart must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s license. While operating the golf cart, drivers must carry the vehicle’s registration, proof of insurance, and their driver’s license at all times.

Default Rules (in the absence of a local ordinance):
• Golf carts may be driven only during daylight hours
• Operation is limited to secondary roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less
• Carts must remain within four (4) miles of the address listed on the registration
• Carts may cross highways with speed limits over 35 mph only at intersections

Passenger Safety
In a significant update to passenger safety regulations, all children under 12 years old are now required to wear a fastened safety belt when riding on public roads.

The Town of Fort Mill encourages all golf cart owners and operators to review these new regulations and ensure they are in compliance to promote safe and responsible use in our community.

For more information, residents can visit the South Carolina DMV website at www.scdmvonline.com.
