Winter is the time when you should take special care of your house. Indiana winters are known for being long and bitterly cold. With a little bit of preparation and some simple maintenance steps, you can make sure your home stays cozy throughout all our seasons.
Disconnect and drain hoses from all exterior faucets.
• Disconnect, drain and store hoses from all exterior faucets. Do not leave them connected to the faucet.
• If you have a hose bibb or automatic watering system, drain it and store it inside for the winter months as well.
• If you have a sprinkler system, drain it and store it inside for the winter months as well.
Insulate pipes and water tanks.
• Insulate pipes and water tanks to prevent freezing.
• Use foam pipe wrap or heat tape around all exposed pipes that run through unheated areas of your house or garage. If you have a crawl space, insulate the pipes in there as well.
• Insulate hot water heater to prevent it from leaking during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing and cause expansion in the tank's internal parts (the most common occurrence happens when you first turn on the faucet after being away for several days).
• Insulate inside attics and basements with fiberglass insulation if those areas are not heated by a forced-air system or another type of mechanical means
