Today is Winter Solstice Day. This year, Winter Solstice lands on December 21st and begins at 4:21AM (est.). Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. It marks the point where Earth's axial tilt is farthest from the sun in the Northern Hemisphere.

Many cultures celebrate the winter solstice with festivals and holidays. Some of these include, Yule which is a pre-Christian festival celebrated in Scandinavia, or Saturnalia which is a festival celebrated in Ancient Rome. Ancient humans observed the winter solstice and created traditions to bring the sun back, such as lighting yule logs and offering gifts of imitation fruit. Fire and light are traditional symbols of the celebrations. It is possible that humans observed the winter solstice as early as the last part of the Stone Age, beginning about 10,200 B.C.

National Ugly Sweater Day is celebrated on the third Friday in December every year. The first ever "official" Ugly Sweater party happened in 2002 in Vancouver, Canada. The party was run by Chris Boyd and John Birch to help raise money for their friend's cancer treatment. It was held at the Commodore Ballroom and had a strict dress code where everyone attending had to be wearing an ugly sweater. The guests loved the idea of wearing bold and colorful sweaters and the event caught on through word-of-mouth. Thus the beginning of National Ugly Sweater Day.
