🚨 BEWARE OF MARKETPLACE RENTAL SCAMS!!
I recently had a woman message me and say that she paid an application fee and submitted an application to someone on Marketplace and they were supposed to “leave the rental unlocked for her to view it” and of course, when she arrived, the unit was locked and nobody in sight.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
‼️ Do not pay “private landlords” anything until you’ve met them and have toured the property. There is no reason to pay an application fee before seeing a property.
‼️ Avoid payment apps! Scammer “landlords” can use them to hack your bank account. Insist on meeting them in person and paying with a check or money order. If they refuse, they may be untrustworthy.
‼️ Do not give your personal/confidential information to anyone without viewing the property and/or meeting the “landlord” and making sure they can open/unlock the rental unit. If they can’t get inside, they are likely scammers and can steal your identity if they have your name, date of birth and SS #.
‼️ Scammers copy posts and steal photos from legitimate landlords and management companies and use them as their own. So when you see a Marketplace post, try to Google search the address and see if it’s listed for rent on any reputable websites. If it is, and if the prices don’t match, it may be a scam!
‼️ If it sounds “too good to be true”…it probably is. There are no amazing rentals anywhere for $750.
