Siding should never directly touch roof shingles, as this causes water to wick up, leading to rot, mold, and damaged, failed siding. A minimum 1–2 inch gap (or at least 1/2 inch for vinyl) is recommended between the siding and roof surface to allow for proper drainage. Correct flashing, such as step flashing, must be installed behind the siding to prevent leaks.

If trees are too close to your house foundation, it can turn into a real structural problem over time—this isn’t just cosmetic.
Why it’s an issue – The root systems can grow under your foundation, causing cracks or uneven settling. Trees pull moisture from the soil, which can shrink or expand the ground (especially in clay-heavy areas like much of Texas). Branches can also damage roofs or gutters if the tree is very close.
How close is “too close”? - A good rule of thumb: Small trees: at least 10–15 feet away. Medium trees: 15–25 feet. Large trees (like oaks): 20–30+ feet.
If a mature tree is closer than that, it may already be affecting your foundation. Warning signs to look for - Cracks in walls, floors, or foundation, doors/windows sticking, uneven floors, visible roots near or under the house
What you can do - Consult an arborist before cutting anything—removing a tree too quickly can worsen foundation issues. Install a root barrier to redirect growth. Keep soil moisture consistent (important in dry/hot climates). In some cases, tree removal may be necessary if the risk is high.
In areas like North Texas with expansive clay soils make foundations more sensitive to moisture changes—trees can amplify this effect significantly.

A termite swarm inside your home almost certainly indicates an active, mature infestation. Immediately contact a pest control professional for a professional inspection, as they are likely eating the wood structure of your home. While alarming, you can vacuum them up, seal off exit points with tape, and turn off lights to reduce attraction, but this is only a temporary fix while waiting for professional.
