Those little TEST and RESET buttons on your outlets are easy to ignore, but they’re there for an important reason.

GFCI outlets are designed to shut off power when they detect certain electrical faults, which is why you’ll commonly see them in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and other areas where moisture may be present.

Every so often, give yours a quick test.

Press TEST — the outlet should lose power.

Then press RESET — the power should return.

If it doesn’t trip or reset the way it should, that’s a good reason to have it looked at by a qualified electrician.

It takes less than a minute and is another simple way to stay familiar with how your home is working.

A sump pump is one of those things you probably don’t think about much… until you really need it.

Before the next round of heavy rain, take a few minutes to make sure yours is actually working.

Check that the pit is clear, make sure the float can move freely, and pour enough water into the pit to see if the pump kicks on and properly discharges outside.

If you have a battery backup, don’t forget to check that too.

It’s a simple homeowner habit, but finding out there’s a problem now is a whole lot better than discovering it during a storm.
