Vicars Island, Near Huletts Landing NY. Aug. 18, 2026 📸 Thanks to Luke Dow Photography for the beautiful shot!
Last week I was able to take some photos while driving up to Ticonderoga, here is a shot looking south on Lake George while looking towards Vicars Island, The Harbor Islands, with the Mother Bunch Island Group and Black Mountain (2,646') in the distance. You can also see this shoal that sits just to the north of Vicars Island.
Truth be told, I didnt know this shoal existed and I am unsure if it is properly marked the way it should be because this shoal is pretty shallow and not marked on the LGPC's boaters map.
So just be aware of this if you have a larger boat on the lake, or if the lake levels dip at all like they did last year.
As far as Vicars Island is concerned, according to Frank Leonbruno's book 'Lake George Reflections' this island was named after a man who had lived on the island. Now he mentions that there is no information on when the guy lived on the island or if Vicar was his first or last name. If I had to guess, this man lived on the islands in the early to mid 1700s since another man lived on the island in the late 1700s.
But if anyone knows more then please let me know!
