Tomorrow is Juneteenth a federal holiday since 2021, commemorating June 19, 1865.

That morning, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with troops to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Two and a half years after Lincoln had signed it into law, tens of thousands of enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free.

A few notes with local meaning:

• Pennsylvania was the first state to pass a gradual abolition law (1780), nearly a century before the Civil War.
• Adams and York Counties - sitting just north of the Mason-Dixon Line were active corridors of the Underground Railroad. Families on both sides of the line risked everything to shelter freedom-seekers headed north.
• Historical markers across our region still tell parts of this story, including stops in Gettysburg, York, and surrounding communities.

As a Realtor, I'll add one honest thought: homeownership is how families build generational wealth in America. Access to that wealth has not always been equal. The work of building a region where every family can put down roots and build something to pass on is ongoing and worth doing well.
