So grab your favorite cup, support a local business, and give yourself a few minutes before anyone asks you an important question. Kauaʻi is paradise…especially after coffee!

One of Kauaʻi’s most colorful little residents, the Gold Dust Day Gecko is actually a long way from home. 🦎

Native to Madagascar and nearby islands, this bright green gecko was first introduced to Hawaiʻi in 1974 when eight were illegally released near Mānoa on Oʻahu.

From there, they multiplied quickly and were intentionally moved to other areas and islands, eventually becoming established on Kauaʻi.

They’re easy to spot during the day with their brilliant green bodies, blue around the eyes, red markings and that unmistakable dusting of gold along their backs.
Despite how perfectly tropical they look, Hawaiʻi has no native land lizards, making the Gold Dust Day Gecko another introduced species that has made the islands home.

Today, they’re a familiar sight around Kauaʻi gardens, lanais and homes—and probably one of the few uninvited houseguests most of us don’t mind seeing!

Fall on Kauaʻi looks a little different, but you can still feel the season change. The mornings get a little cooler, the trade winds feel better, the trails start getting greener, and North Shore surf begins to come alive. It’s a great time for beach mornings, sunset walks, hiking, farmers markets, and slowing down just enough to enjoy where we live. As Fall moves along, we also start watching for the first humpback whales returning to Hawaiian waters. No sweaters or falling leaves needed—this is Fall, Kauaʻi style.

First and most importantly, we are all okay following Hurricane Lowell and thankfully, experienced only minor damage. 🙏🏽 We know many of our friends, clients, and neighbors were not as fortunate, and our hearts remain with everyone still recovering and rebuilding. ❤️

These are the August market numbers we had planned to share before the hurricane. They reflect sales activity before Lowell and do not yet show what effect, if any, the storm may have on the market in the months ahead.

To put it plainly, the Kauaʻi real estate market was already very soft. August single-family home sales were down 20% from last year, while condo sales were down 37.5%. Year to date, home sales are down 9.2%, condo sales are down 21.4%, and land sales are down 31.7%.

The 10.6% increase in the median price of a single-family home may look encouraging, but it does not mean values increased by nearly 11% across the board. More luxury properties sold and pushed the median higher, while many everyday properties are not moving as well due to overpricing, buyer exhaustion, and interest rates that remain on the higher end. Buyers are being selective, and sellers need to be realistic about pricing, condition, and presentation.

Kauaʻi is moving forward, but we are doing so me ka hōʻihi—with respect for those still recovering.
