Entrepreneurship Runs in the Family
Family can mean a lot of things. Support. Trust. Encouragement. The people who know where you came from, know what you are capable of, and occasionally remind you of things you would prefer they forget.
In our family, it also means entrepreneurship.
Three out of four siblings have gone on to establish successful small businesses. But the entrepreneurial streak did not start with us.
Our father became an entrepreneur in mid-life and continued working for himself until he was 72 years old. We watched him support his family by doing something he genuinely enjoyed. He showed us that building something of your own does not have to follow a traditional timeline, and that meaningful work does not come with an expiration date.
The rest of us were paying attention.
Although our businesses are very different, they share many of the same principles we grew up with: work hard, treat people fairly, know your craft, follow through, and earn the trust people place in you.
Based on three out of four children starting businesses, we may also have inherited a questionable tolerance for paperwork.

My business, AJS Home Realty LLC, grew from seeing how quickly the responsibilities of a property can become overwhelming when life changes.
As a Property Transition Manager, I take ownership of the property-related work for homeowners during periods of change.
That can include coordinating vendors and contractors, managing repairs and cleanouts, organizing a downsizing or move, overseeing a property for an out-of-state family, and keeping multiple moving pieces headed toward one deadline.
Clients are often handing me responsibility for something very personal: their home or a family member's home. That responsibility requires organization, resourcefulness and trust.

More Than Three Businesses
I am proud of what my brothers have built, but this really is not a story about three websites.
It is about family.
Our father's example showed us that entrepreneurship can provide both a livelihood and a lasting sense of purpose.
Trust is another part of that foundation.
Whether someone is giving you access to their home, asking you to work on their electrical system, trusting you to inspect one of the largest purchases they may ever make, or asking you to manage a major property transition, that trust has to be earned.
Our businesses may be different, but the foundation is familiar.
Work hard. Know your craft. Take care of people. Follow through.
