Ford CEO Jim Farley made it unmistakably clear: the Mustang will keep offering a manual transmission for the foreseeable future.

In a recent interview he joked they’d have to pry the stick out of their “cold, dead hands,” a remarkably firm position from a major automaker while many others are abandoning manuals.

This isn’t just sentimentalism. Ford treats the Mustang as one of the last true enthusiast cars, and a stick shift is central to that character—especially on models like the Dark Horse, where driver engagement is a selling point as much as raw performance.

Automatics (notably the 10‑speed) are quicker and sell in far greater numbers, but a dedicated group of buyers still demand manuals, and Ford doesn’t want to lose them.

As the industry shifts to EVs and more automated gearboxes, the Mustang stands out as a bastion of old‑school driving. Long term, tighter emissions rules and electrification could put the manual under pressure, but for now Ford is prioritizing brand identity over maximum efficiency.
