Diann's Cabin – A Special Closing

Every once in a while, I have the privilege of selling a home that's about so much more than real estate.

I've always felt a deep connection to the people who came before us. I wonder who sat by the fire, who watched the first snowfall from the porch, who planted the trees, and who welcomed friends through the front door. The homes are beautiful, but it's the lives lived within them that stay with me.

I recently had the honor of representing the sale of a little mountain cabin that had belonged to Diann Coate.

Diann first came to Idyllwild in 1974 after a friend invited her to visit. Like so many of us, it was love at first sight. She made the mountain her home for the next 48 years.

She taught English in the Moreno Valley Unified School District for more than three decades, making the drive off the mountain through snowstorms, heavy rain, mudslides, and whatever else the San Jacintos decided to throw at her. At the end of each day, she returned to the little cabin she loved.

Standing inside that cozy home, it wasn't hard to imagine coming home after a long day, putting the kettle on, choosing a book from one of the shelves, lighting a fire, and settling into the quiet that only a mountain evening can offer.

But Diann's story reached far beyond her front door.

She devoted countless hours to this community through the Nature Center, the Izaak Walton League, the Idyllwild Area Historical Society, Mountain Community Patrol, the Idyllwild Community Fund, and many other organizations that helped shape the town we love today.

As I explored the cabin, I discovered something that made the experience even more meaningful: original paintings created especially for Diann by her friend, Ernie Maxwell.

Many know Ernie as the founder of the Town Crier, an artist, conservationist, and one of the people most responsible for preserving Idyllwild's rustic character. Seeing artwork he had created specifically for Diann was a beautiful reminder that the history of this town isn't found only in museums or old newspaper articles. Sometimes it's hanging quietly on the walls of a home, waiting to tell its story.

When Diann passed away, she left the cabin to her dear friend, Gay Almquist. Sadly, Gay passed away not long afterward, and her brother, Tom, made the difficult decision to sell the home on behalf of the family.

Representing homes like this is always bittersweet.

For many families, a cabin isn't simply a piece of property. It's where traditions began, friendships grew, children played, holidays were celebrated, and ordinary days quietly became lifelong memories. Selling a family cabin often marks the end of one chapter while making room for another.

During the process, Tom noticed how much I appreciated Idyllwild's history and Ernie Maxwell's artwork. In an act of incredible generosity, he gifted me several collectible books along with the original Ernie Maxwell paintings from the cabin.

Those paintings now have a permanent home with me, where they'll be treasured and protected for years to come. Every time I look at them, I'll think not only of Ernie's remarkable legacy, but of Diann, Gay, and a little cabin that quietly witnessed nearly half a century of mountain life.

Moments like this remind me why I love what I do.

Yes, I help people buy and sell homes. But every now and then, I'm entrusted with something much more meaningful. I become a small part of preserving the stories of the people who loved this mountain long before I arrived, so they won't be forgotten.

The world lost one of our best today.

Dolly Parton was a light in a sometimes dark world. She was funny, generous, kind, wildly talented and unapologetically herself. She wanted to make the world smile.

And at that, she succeeded.

Like millions of people, I felt like I knew Dolly even though I never met her. But I was lucky enough to have one small connection to her life.

I sold Dolly’s former Idyllwild home twice.

Dolly bought the cabin because Idyllwild reminded her of the mountains of Tennessee. Longtime locals still tell stories about seeing her here, sometimes walking into town with her mom in full makeup, colorful clothes and those iconic high heels.

When I first walked through her former home years later, so much of Dolly was still there. Her furnishings, collectibles and little personal things gave me a glimpse of the woman behind the enormous fame.

I think that’s why her loss feels a little more personal to me today.

Brené Brown said it beautifully:

“You left our hearts better than you found them. Thank you, Dolly.”

Selling a home is a big deal. You deserve more than a sales pitch.

No promises I can’t make. No Realtor one-liners. No telling you what you want to hear just to get a listing signed.

Just straight, honest answers about your home, the market, what I think, and what you can realistically expect.

And if you decide to sell, I’ll handle the details, stay on top of the process, keep you informed, and deal with as much of the behind-the-scenes chaos as I can without making it yours.

That’s the job.

Thinking about selling your Idyllwild home? I’m always happy to have a conversation.

I’m so happy to finally make this official. Amber Rausch, REALTOR® has joined Idyllwild Properties!

Over the past several months, Amber and I have gotten to know each other, and I’ve loved discovering how much we share in the way we think about real estate, this community, and the people we work with.

Amber has been in real estate for five years and dreamed of calling Idyllwild home long before she actually made the move. She brings warmth, thoughtfulness, creativity, and a genuine desire to take good care of her clients.

She’s also a mom, small business owner and candle maker, occasional yoga instructor, dog lover, and someone who has wholeheartedly embraced life on this mountain.

After many years of running Idyllwild Properties on my own, it feels really exciting to see the brokerage grow. I couldn’t be happier to have Amber beside me for this next chapter.

Please join me in giving her a very warm Idyllwild Properties welcome. I’m so glad you’re here, Amber!

This one made me laugh because it’s painfully accurate.

Buyers don’t know what’s realistic until they start touring homes, and that’s okay. My job isn’t to crush dreams. It’s to help people find the home they’ll love most within their budget.

(And every once in a while… the unicorn really does exist.)

Once you’re done giggling at the AI song, take a look at this rare opportunity…

This 1940 mountain cabin sits on four contiguous lots totaling approximately 0.79 acres and is ready for its next chapter.

Largely original throughout, the cabin features one bedroom, one bath, a spacious loft sleeping area, knotty pine walls, a brick fireplace, and the vintage character that makes old mountain homes so special.

This isn’t a move-in-ready property. It’s a project for someone who appreciates history and sees the potential in an unusually large parcel with an 86-year-old cabin waiting to be restored.

Offered at $229,000, this property is being sold strictly as-is and will require a cash purchase.

If you’ve been looking for a mountain restoration project with room to dream, this one is worth a look.

One by one, these homes found their next chapter.

I’m incredibly grateful to the clients who trusted me to represent them and thankful to be part of so many new beginnings. Congratulations to each of you, and thank you for allowing me to help make it happen.

Here’s to many happy memories in your new homes or, for my seller clients, on your next chapter!

There is a warmth to vintage handcrafted mountain homes that simply can’t be replicated.

This historic lodge-style cabin is one of those rare properties where every room offers another detail to admire. Peeled log beams, hand-painted woodwork, handcrafted built-ins, soaring open-beam ceilings, and a massive native stone fireplace reflect the craftsmanship of an earlier era.

The main home features 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a vintage kitchen with cedar slab countertops, generous storage, a separate laundry room, and multiple decks that make it easy to enjoy the mountain setting.

One of my favorite features is hidden behind an authentic bank-style vault door and additional steel doors: a below-grade room reminiscent of a Prohibition-era wine cellar.

A separate guest studio with its own entrance, spacious closet, 3/4 bath, and private deck offers wonderful flexibility for guests, creative space, or a quiet retreat.

Set on .76 acre with native stone walls, winding pathways, a detached garage with workshop, RV parking, and just minutes from the village.

Some homes impress you with finishes. Others leave you thinking about them long after you’ve walked out the door. This one is definitely the latter.
