Your daily reminder that sometimes the best amenity is simply being outside.

West Jefferson is surrounded by the kind of mountain scenery that makes a walk through the woods feel like a perfectly reasonable way to spend the afternoon.

This one is for the ladies. We haven't posted an event specifically for you all in a while!

Sometimes the best afternoons are the slow ones spent with good friends. Ladies Day Out: Food, Fun & Flowers is back by popular demand at The Old Store at Grassy Creek, and it is exactly the kind of gathering that makes the High Country feel like home.

On Saturday, August 29th, from 12:30 to 3:00pm, settle in for a catered lunch from High Country Tea & Grazing, time to shop and unwind, and a hands-on flower arranging class led by Stephanie Shipley of Blue Ridge Valley Farms and Lilylee Florist. It is $75 per person and limited to just 20 reservations, so gather your friends and make an afternoon of it!

Buying a home is a big decision, and the walkthrough is where a lot of that decision gets made. Here is what we tell our buyers to look for.

The most important issues to focus on are structural, mechanical, and moisture-related, because those are the most expensive to fix after closing. Everything else can usually wait.

Room by room, keep an eye out for:

Kitchens and baths. Run the faucets, check water pressure, and look under the sinks for leaks or warped wood. These rooms hide the most plumbing.

Systems and age. Ask about the HVAC, water heater, and electrical panel. Most systems last 15 to 20 years, and knowing their age helps you plan ahead.

Outside. Make sure the ground slopes away from the foundation, and check decks, fencing, and the garage for wear.

And if it is part of an HOA, always ask about fees, rules, and any upcoming special assessments. A little curiosity now saves a lot of surprises later. When you are ready to find your place in Ashe County, we would love to help you look closely.

Fall is nearly here in the High Country, and the calendar is starting to fill with the kind of cozy, creative gatherings we love to see. Mark your calendar for Thursday, August 27th, when the Florence Thomas Art School brings a Wet Felted Eyeglass Case workshop to Old Barn Winery in West Jefferson.

From 4 to 6pm, artist Jane Campbell will walk you through the wet felting process while you pick from an array of gorgeous wool fibers and embellishments to make a piece that is truly yours.

Every material you need is provided, and a glass of wine is included to round out the experience. Class size is kept small at just ten students, so it stays relaxed and personal. This is what living in Ashe County is all about, good company, local artistry, and a beautiful place to slow down and create.

There’s something pretty special about being able to get in the car, take a drive around the West Jefferson area, and find views like this seemingly tucked away right along the road.

No elaborate itinerary. No long hike required. No tourist attraction necessary.

Just beautiful mountain scenery, rushing water, towering trees, and a quiet moment that reminds you why this part of North Carolina is so easy to appreciate.

The communities surrounding West Jefferson are full of these little surprises. Take a different route into town and you might discover a waterfall. Turn down a road you’ve never taken before and you may find a gorgeous mountain overlook. Spend an afternoon exploring the area and you’re likely to come across a creek, trail, farm, or scenic stretch of road that you never knew existed.

A recent Zillow piece breaks down what pet owners should look for: a physically fenced yard over an invisible one, hard flooring instead of carpet, a main-floor bedroom for aging or short-legged pets, and neighborhoods with dog parks, good vets, and walkable green space nearby. It also flags the things people forget, like HOA breed or weight restrictions and proximity to wildlife.
