Freshman year at Monmouth University, eating breakfast alone in the dining hall, and the breaking news hit every screen in the room at once.

I'd only been away from my family a few days, and in that moment the world felt a lot scarier than I ever expected it to.

Twenty five years ago today.

The first responders who gave their lives that day were ordinary people who did extraordinary things in a moment most of us can't imagine. This memorial in Union Beach, where I stopped back in August while I was out taking photos for work, is dedicated to the New Jersey EMTs and paramedics who ran toward it. Memorials like this one are scattered all over this state, and every one of them is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made that day.

That should never be forgotten.

Celebrated Labor Day weekend at Hebrew Park and Gillie Park, two of Lacey Township's most beautiful parks. I spent a few years coaching my boys and their teammates and now I enjoy rooting them on from the sidelines. Thank you to the Lacey Soccer Club for hosting another great tournament. I'm proud to sponsor them and other youth sports programs in my hometown. Happy Labor Day from our family to yours.

You could drive past Forked River Beach Bayfront Park a hundred times and never know it’s there. The entrance is tucked between two houses on Beach Boulevard, and you can’t see the park itself from the road at all.

We’ve been going for a while now. My kids head straight for the ship, climbing up and sliding back down over and over. The ground throughout the park is that rubberized material, so a scraped knee doesn’t mean an early trip home. Once they’ve worn themselves out we’ll walk part of the trail that runs almost a mile along the bay starting right at the park. It’s an easy way to spend a morning without fighting boardwalk traffic, if you know where to turn in.
