For me, sobriety was about alcohol, but my story may look a little different than what people typically picture when they hear the word “sober.” I wasn’t drinking heavily every single day. Sometimes it was simply a glass of wine in the evening, and other times I’d go out with friends and realize I was still out at 2 a.m. drinking.

My life wasn’t falling apart because of alcohol. I just reached a point where I knew that lifestyle didn’t align with the life I wanted anymore.

I wanted to prioritize my health. I wanted to be the best, most present version of myself for my baby. And I wanted my actions to match the things I talk about every day…discipline, growth, accountability, and becoming better.

I also realized that if I wanted to inspire other people to change their lives, I had to be willing to make difficult changes in my own.

I didn’t have to wait until alcohol became a serious problem to decide that it no longer had a place in my life. I knew myself well enough to know that letting it go completely was the right decision for me.

And that’s probably been one of the biggest lessons of sobriety: you don’t have to hit rock bottom to decide you want something better for yourself.

I chose my health. I chose being present for my baby. I chose the woman I want to become. And if sharing that decision inspires even one person to take an honest look at something in their own life that no longer serves them, then it’s worth talking about.
