Bill Cosby's seven-story NYC mansion just sold for $28 million — and it nearly went to a bank instead of a buyer...

The property, known as the Luyster Mansion, sits on the Upper East Side and boasts an ornate limestone facade, 11 fireplaces, and a 500-square-foot roof garden near Central Park. For decades, it was one of the most storied private residences in Manhattan. Then the debt piled up — and the clock started ticking.

The Cosby family took out a $12.25 million loan in 2010 and added another $5.25 million loan in 2014, bringing their total debt to $17.5 million. By June 2024, they had defaulted on both loans, and a foreclosure lawsuit followed. On top of that, more than $300,000 in unpaid property taxes had accumulated, and the couple had been given a deadline of December 2024 to settle the debt — a deadline that came and went without payment.
The Luyster Mansion was officially listed for $29 million in September 2025 through The Corcoran Group. Within just a month, the property went under contract, and by November 2025, it had sold for $28 million. That's $1 million under asking — remarkable given the financial and reputational drama attached to the name on the deed.
The mansion itself is extraordinary. Designed in 1899 by architect John Duncan — the same man behind Grant's Tomb — the home spans roughly 13,000 square feet across seven stories, with seven bedrooms, nearly ten bathrooms, and a copper mansard roof. It's the kind of property Manhattan rarely lets go of.

The sale gave Cosby enough to satisfy the lender and buy time on a second, smaller townhouse he also owns — a four-story Lenox Hill property that had its own separate $4.2 million loan default with CitiMortgage. The buyer of the mansion has not been identified. Some homes carry too much history to stay off the market forever — and apparently, that's true even when the history is complicated.
