🐶🎉 Santa Monica is throwing a giant block party for dogs, and everyone’s invited!

On Sunday, October 18, Main Street is going car-free for the Main Street Block Party + Day of the Dog, a free community festival packed with pups, live music, local vendors, and family-friendly fun.

🐾 Here’s what to look forward to:
💦 A dog pool party and yoga with dogs
📸 Free pet portraits
🎸 Live music, including a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band
🎨 Free kids’ activities, face painting, and arts and crafts
🧘 Free one-hour fitness circuits
🍰 A giant cake cutting at 3 p.m. celebrating 100 years of Route 66, with complimentary cake and dog treats

The Day of the Dog festival runs from noon to 5 p.m., while the overall block party continues until 6 p.m.

🥗🍕 Souplantation fans, this could be the comeback you’ve been waiting for.

The beloved all-you-can-eat buffet chain appears to be planning a return to California after its locations closed in 2020.

Souplantation launched in San Diego in 1978 and became famous for its fresh-made salads, soups, pizza, and endless buffet options.

The chain eventually grew to 97 locations, mostly in California, while operating as Sweet Tomatoes in other states.

Now, Sweet Tomatoes has teased a potential California comeback with an Instagram post featuring a “Welcome to California” sign and the caption:

👀 “Stay tuned…”

The company says it will announce the exact location very soon, but so far, there’s no confirmed restaurant location or opening date.

And based on the teaser, Southern California fans are already wondering if the comeback could happen somewhere in the region.

🏘️ A long-vacant school site in Woodland Hills could soon have a very different future.

LAUSD is considering a proposed 390-unit workforce housing project on the former Collins Street Elementary School site at 5717 N. Rudnick Ave.

The apartments would be specifically designed for LAUSD employees, including teachers, nurses, custodians, administrative staff, and instructional aides.

🏠 The proposed project would include:

• 390 one-, two-, and three-bedroom rental units
• Income eligibility from 30% to 120% of Los Angeles County's area median income
• Approximately 550 parking spaces
• Outdoor play areas and walking paths
• An on-site fitness center
• A communal resident room

The proposed design would rise five stories along Shoup Avenue before stepping down to three stories along Miranda Street and Rudnick Avenue to transition toward nearby single-family homes.

The project comes after an LAUSD survey found that 46% of responding employees had considered leaving their positions because of the high cost of housing in Los Angeles.

If approved, community engagement and design refinement would begin this year, with construction anticipated in 2029 and completion targeted for 2031.

⛽ California drivers could see some relief at the gas pump.

The state is allowing winter-blend gasoline to reach gas stations earlier than usual, a move that could help lower fuel costs.

According to AAA, California’s average price for regular gasoline reached $6.38 per gallon on September 29, 2026.

Here’s how the change works:
☀️ Summer-blend gasoline is designed to evaporate less in hot weather, helping reduce ozone and smog. However, it costs more to produce.
🍂 Winter-blend gasoline is less expensive to produce and normally becomes available starting November 1.

Under a temporary measure announced September 28, California suspended its seasonal summer-blend requirement for the remainder of the season, allowing winter-blend fuel to be manufactured, imported, distributed, and sold earlier.

💵 Potential savings: Up to about 30 cents per gallon, according to the estimate cited in the report.

However, that reduction is not guaranteed, and prices won't necessarily fall immediately at every station. Fuel production, transportation, crude oil prices, and refinery conditions can all affect what drivers pay.

Santa Monica just earned another reason to catch the sunset.

The coastal city ranked No. 2 in the world in a new ranking of the best destinations for sunrise and sunset views, making it the only U.S. destination in the global top 10.

And one of the best ways to experience it? 🚲🌊
Start near the Santa Monica Pier and cruise along The Strand, the Marvin Braude Bike Trail that stretches roughly 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance County Beach.

You don't have to ride the entire route. A golden-hour ride through Venice Beach, the Venice Canals, and toward Marina del Rey gives you plenty of coastline, ocean views, and iconic L.A. scenery before heading back toward Santa Monica for sunset.

✈️ The trains are here. The tracks are here. But LAX passengers are still waiting.

Los Angeles International Airport’s long-delayed Automated People Mover has been pushed back again, with a new potential opening date of January 6, 2027.

The key word? Potentially. The contractor says even that date is not guaranteed.

The $3.3 billion project was originally scheduled to open in 2023 and was most recently targeting October. The 2.25-mile electric train is designed to connect LAX terminals with economy parking, the rental car center, and the LAX Metro Transit Center.

Once it opens, the rideshare and taxi pickup area is also expected to move closer to the Transit Center.

Before passengers can board, the system must complete 30 consecutive days of successful testing, pass an independent review, complete an airport assessment, and finalize a utility agreement with LADWP.

The project was recently reported as 99.6% complete, but the opening timeline continues to move.

It could still open in time for Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027, but another delay remains possible.
