To protect your HVAC system during extreme heat, replace your air filter every 30 days to ensure airflow, keep the outdoor condenser unit clear of debris and grass clippings, and set your thermostat to a steady 75-78 degrees instead of overworking the system by cranking it to unusually low temperatures. Here are the most effective ways to shield your system from breaking down during extreme heat:1. Maximize Airflow and System EfficiencyInspect and change filters: A clogged air filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder and longer to cool your home, which can lead to overheating.Keep supply and return vents open: Ensure that furniture, drapes, or rugs are not blocking any vents inside your home.Clear the outdoor unit: Ensure the outside condenser is free of grass, dirt, and leaves. You can gently rinse the outdoor coils with a garden hose to clear built-up grime, but always make sure your power is shut off first.Maintain the unit's shade: While not always possible, planting shrubs or setting up an external shade structure that blocks direct sunlight (without restricting airflow) can help the outdoor unit operate slightly more efficiently.2. Manage Your ThermostatAvoid over-cooling: Air conditioners are generally designed to cool a home by roughly 15 to 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature. Setting the thermostat below 72°F on a 95°F day means your AC will likely run constantly without ever reaching the target temperature.Maintain a constant temperature: Avoid frequently adjusting the thermostat up and down. Set it to a comfortable level (e.g., 78°F) and leave it.Avoid turning the AC completely off: If you are leaving the house for the day, raise the thermostat a few degrees rather than shutting it off entirely, as it will take far too much energy for the system to cool the hot house down when you return.3. Reduce the Heat Load on Your HomeBlock the sun: Close your blinds, shades, and blackout curtains during the hottest parts of the day, particularly on windows facing south and west.Use ceiling fans: Fans make the room feel cooler by creating a wind-chill effect, allowing you to set the thermostat slightly higher without sacrificing comfort.Limit appliance usage: Avoid running heat-producing appliances during the hottest part of the day. This includes ovens, stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers. For tips on how to properly clean the exterior condenser unit and maintain your air filters to keep your system running smoothly:
