Al and I celebrated our 27th (wow!) anniversary last night with a quiet dinner at The Last Refuge. Just us. Exactly how we like it.

We were home in time to walk the dog, grab ice cream with Katy, and be in bed before 10. Apparently we’ve become the people we used to make fun of. No complaints.

Twenty-seven years hasn’t always been easy — marriage isn’t. But we’ve been lucky to have incredible examples in both of our parents, who showed us what commitment, patience, and real partnership look like over a lifetime.

Along the way we’ve raised two amazing kids, built a life together, survived the hard stuff, and somehow still genuinely like each other.

That’s the whole thing, honestly.

I’m a lucky man. Happy Anniversary Sweetheart! ❤️

Excited to make the drive downtown this a.m. — which I don’t do enough — to meet someone new. She had great energy, and we had a great conversation.

We literally spent part of it talking about why people don’t come downtown anymore and how much we hope it turns around.

I walked back to my car — seven minutes past the meter…I’ll own it.

Where do you get your news? And more importantly… is it actually factual?

One of the biggest problems in America right now is that people confuse “agrees with me” with “true.” Those are not the same thing.

This monthly chart from Ad Fontes Media tracks media sources by BOTH:
• political bias (left ↔ right)
• reliability/factual reporting (bottom ↔ top)

The sweet spot is the green box near the top center. A little bias is normal — we’re human. But if your primary news source lives in the “hyper-partisan rage bait / conspiracy cosplay” section of the chart… yeah… maybe pump the brakes before calling everyone else sheep.

Honestly, one of the healthiest things you can do is consume a mix of fact-based sources that challenge you a little. If every headline makes you instantly feel smarter, angrier, and morally superior… congratulations, you may be getting algorithmically seduced (Baaa, you’re the real sheep).

Try reading outside your tribe once in a while. Your blood pressure — and probably democracy — will appreciate it.

Recovering Catholic.
Recovering Republican.
And apparently now… assigned 37,000 words of papal homework.

As someone who grew up Catholic and voted Republican for most of my adult life, Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical challenged me.

Not because he abandoned Catholic teaching — he absolutely did not.

But because he forcefully reminds us that human dignity, truth, compassion, democracy, care for migrants, opposition to cruelty, and resistance to the worship of power ALSO matter morally.

Maybe more than ever right now.

I’m not telling Catholics to become Democrats.
I AM asking Catholics to stop voting on autopilot.

This feels bigger than party politics now.

I honestly don’t understand how people are still acting like this is normal.

This is no longer Republicans vs Democrats, or arguing over tax rates and policy differences.
Democracies are SUPPOSED to argue. That part is healthy.

What’s NOT healthy is a President openly celebrating critics being fired, attacking journalists and comedians, demanding loyalty above truth, and punishing anyone — even inside his own party — who dares challenge him.

That is not strength. That is weak, paranoid, authoritarian behavior.

At some point, we have to stop the bleeding first.
Save the system first.
THEN we can go back to fighting about policy.

Because once truth itself becomes controlled by politicians, billionaires, and propaganda… getting democracy back is a hell of a lot harder than people think.
