Top products that need to be thrown out for a healthy home (read all the way to the bottom for an easy solution!)
Have you heard the saying “you can’t heal in the environment that made you sick”?! Our homes can’t be bathed in toxins if we want to be well! These are some of the products in homes that are daily damaging all areas of health including hormones, respiratory health, metabolism, and more.
🏠 Dryer sheets
Dryer sheets and fabric softeners are one of the most toxic household products on the market.
Here are a few of the chemicals found in many commercial dryer sheets and the side effects they are linked to:
* Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer
* Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant
* Ethanol: On the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders
* Limonene: Suspected Gastrointestinal or Liver Toxicant, Immunotoxicant,Kidney Toxicant, Neurotoxicant, Respiratory Toxicant, and Skin or Sense Organ Toxicant
* A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage
* Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list
* Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders
* Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic
* Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders
* Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled
* Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs or “quats”): reduce static in your clothes but can cause skin and respiratory irritation. In addition, the widespread use of quats is linked to the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Also, did you know that studies have shown that liquid fabric softeners make fabric more flammable? No one wants extra flammable clothes and pajamas.
🏠 Candles/air fresheners/wax warmers (in home and in vehicles)
Air fresheners are known to contain formaldehyde, a strong (possibly carcinogenic) substance that irritates the skin, eyes or throat. They contain other dangerous chemicals which may cause nervous system damage or pulmonary edema in sensitive individuals.
The fragrances (even those marked unscented) can trigger asthma and allergies. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reviewed 2,000 household cleaning products in 2012 and found that 53% of cleaning products contain ingredients harmful to the lungs AND 22% of cleaning products contain chemicals known to cause asthma in otherwise healthy people.
A March 2021 study found that inhalation of toxic air fresheners induces insulin resistance which may contribute to Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic issues.
Study groups with air fresheners had higher HbA1c’s as well!
This is in addition to the proven dermal, respiratory, and hormone risks!
Would you have guessed that all that chemical air freshener stuff could have such an impact on health just by inhalation?
🏠 Cologne/perfume
Did you know that lung exhalation volume declines by 18 to 58 percent during cologne exposure which can trigger asthma?!
“Four patients with a history of worsening of asthma on exposure to cologne underwent challenge with a cologne, and their pulmonary function was tested before, during, and after the exposure. Forced expiratory volume in one second declined 18 to 58 percent below the baseline period during the 10-minute exposure and gradually increased in the next 20 minutes.
A survey of 60 asthmatic patients revealed a history of respiratory symptoms in 57 on exposure to one or more common odors. Odors are an important cause of worsening of asthma.”

A study tested pregnant women's urine for parabens and phthalates. These toxins found on body care products, perfume/cologne, etc., are endocrine (s*x hormone, thyroid, adrenal) disruptors and when used during pregnancy can permanently alter the developing child's hormones.
Women using cologne/perfume had phthalate concentrations 167% higher than non-users.

🏠 Conventional Deodorant / Anti-Perspirants
In a container of deodorant you will likely find aluminum compounds, parabens, steareths, triclosan, propylene glycol, trethanolamine (TEA), diethranolamine (DEA), fragrances, dye, and artificial colors.
Aluminum actually clogs the pores and temporarily stops you from sweating. Sounds good, right? Isn’t that what we want?
NO! Sweating is one of the ways your body detoxifies itself and is a natural healthy process. Plus aluminum can interfere with estrogen levels, contributing to hormone imbalance along with other problems like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Parabens are a group of compounds used as a preservative in most cosmetic and personal products. They also synthetically mimic estrogen and contribute to hormone problems.
Parabens are even found in 99% of breast cancer tumors!
Triclosan is an antibacterial agent and preservative in personal care and home-cleaning products. It is a hormone disruptor; and can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes.
Propylene glycol is an alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent and is known to cause allergic contact dermatitis.
TEA and DEA can cause damage to the kidney and liver. These chemicals have been banned in other countries because of the harm they can cause on the body and the link to cancer.
Artificial colors, dyes, and synthetic fragrances can cause allergic reactions, contain hormone disrupters, carcinogens, and are linked to s***m damage. Some dyes like, red 40, are banned in other countries.
🏠 Antibacterial soaps/cleaners & bleach
For many years antibacterial soaps were assumed the "better" way to ward of harmful diseases and bacteria. However the triclosoan and triclorcarbon is actually harmful. According to theFDA, it can be linked to creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria
Bleach negatively impacts the respiratory system. Both bleach and products with triclosan destroy beneficial microbes in and on the body which are needed to fend off harmful pathogens.
