Top products that need to be thrown out for a healthy home (read all the way to the bottom for an easy solution!)

Have you heard the saying “you can’t heal in the environment that made you sick”?! Our homes can’t be bathed in toxins if we want to be well! These are some of the products in homes that are daily damaging all areas of health including hormones, respiratory health, metabolism, and more.

🏠 Dryer sheets

Dryer sheets and fabric softeners are one of the most toxic household products on the market.

Here are a few of the chemicals found in many commercial dryer sheets and the side effects they are linked to:

* Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer

* Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant

* Ethanol: On the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders

* Limonene: Suspected Gastrointestinal or Liver Toxicant, Immunotoxicant,Kidney Toxicant, Neurotoxicant, Respiratory Toxicant, and Skin or Sense Organ Toxicant

* A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage

* Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list

* Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders

* Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic

* Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders

* Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled

* Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs or “quats”): reduce static in your clothes but can cause skin and respiratory irritation. In addition, the widespread use of quats is linked to the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Also, did you know that studies have shown that liquid fabric softeners make fabric more flammable? No one wants extra flammable clothes and pajamas.

🏠 Candles/air fresheners/wax warmers (in home and in vehicles)

Air fresheners are known to contain formaldehyde, a strong (possibly carcinogenic) substance that irritates the skin, eyes or throat. They contain other dangerous chemicals which may cause nervous system damage or pulmonary edema in sensitive individuals.

The fragrances (even those marked unscented) can trigger asthma and allergies. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reviewed 2,000 household cleaning products in 2012 and found that 53% of cleaning products contain ingredients harmful to the lungs AND 22% of cleaning products contain chemicals known to cause asthma in otherwise healthy people.

A March 2021 study found that inhalation of toxic air fresheners induces insulin resistance which may contribute to Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic issues.

Study groups with air fresheners had higher HbA1c’s as well!

This is in addition to the proven dermal, respiratory, and hormone risks!

Would you have guessed that all that chemical air freshener stuff could have such an impact on health just by inhalation?

🏠 Cologne/perfume

Did you know that lung exhalation volume declines by 18 to 58 percent during cologne exposure which can trigger asthma?!

“Four patients with a history of worsening of asthma on exposure to cologne underwent challenge with a cologne, and their pulmonary function was tested before, during, and after the exposure. Forced expiratory volume in one second declined 18 to 58 percent below the baseline period during the 10-minute exposure and gradually increased in the next 20 minutes.

A survey of 60 asthmatic patients revealed a history of respiratory symptoms in 57 on exposure to one or more common odors. Odors are an important cause of worsening of asthma.”

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3079951/

A study tested pregnant women's urine for parabens and phthalates. These toxins found on body care products, perfume/cologne, etc., are endocrine (s*x hormone, thyroid, adrenal) disruptors and when used during pregnancy can permanently alter the developing child's hormones.

Women using cologne/perfume had phthalate concentrations 167% higher than non-users.

🏠 Conventional Deodorant / Anti-Perspirants

In a container of deodorant you will likely find aluminum compounds, parabens, steareths, triclosan, propylene glycol, trethanolamine (TEA), diethranolamine (DEA), fragrances, dye, and artificial colors.

Aluminum actually clogs the pores and temporarily stops you from sweating. Sounds good, right? Isn’t that what we want?

NO! Sweating is one of the ways your body detoxifies itself and is a natural healthy process. Plus aluminum can interfere with estrogen levels, contributing to hormone imbalance along with other problems like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Parabens are a group of compounds used as a preservative in most cosmetic and personal products. They also synthetically mimic estrogen and contribute to hormone problems.

Parabens are even found in 99% of breast cancer tumors!

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent and preservative in personal care and home-cleaning products. It is a hormone disruptor; and can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes.

Propylene glycol is an alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent and is known to cause allergic contact dermatitis.

TEA and DEA can cause damage to the kidney and liver. These chemicals have been banned in other countries because of the harm they can cause on the body and the link to cancer.

Artificial colors, dyes, and synthetic fragrances can cause allergic reactions, contain hormone disrupters, carcinogens, and are linked to s***m damage. Some dyes like, red 40, are banned in other countries.

🏠 Antibacterial soaps/cleaners & bleach

For many years antibacterial soaps were assumed the "better" way to ward of harmful diseases and bacteria. However the triclosoan and triclorcarbon is actually harmful. According to theFDA, it can be linked to creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Bleach negatively impacts the respiratory system. Both bleach and products with triclosan destroy beneficial microbes in and on the body which are needed to fend off harmful pathogens.

One of my favorite moments in real estate is watching my clients walk into *the one.*

Not because it’s the biggest house.
Not because it’s the most updated.
Not because it checks every single box.

But because something just feels right.

You can see it on their faces.

The way they slow down, start imagining where the furniture will go, where holidays will be spent, where memories will be made.

The right home isn’t always something you can explain on paper.

AND it’s often NOT the one you love from the listing pictures!

This is why I’m all for scheduling home tours for the homes that meet your criteria, even if you’re unsure from the pictures!

(It’s also why I put so much emphasis on having very good professional photograps of the properties I list!)

Have you ever walked into a home and just knew? 🤍

And this is why you ALWAYS do a final walkthrough on ANY property before closing!

A Portland couple discovered something very expensive after closing on a land purchase.

Back in February, they visited the 1.2-acre plot of land and found around 40 tires on the lot. They told the seller they would take care of removing the tires and the seller offered a credit in exchange for the expense.

They returned to their new property and discovered countless tires had been illegally dumped at the edge of it. There are thousands of them stacked high and littered everywhere.

My husband worked as an environmental scientist for Louisiana’s DEQ and saw tire shops doing this—illrgally dumping tires instead of bringing them to the proper recycling facilities as they reported.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office is investigating the trespassing and littering. The county's health department and Oregon DEQ are also looking into the environmental impact.

The new property owners say it will cost them tens of thousands of dollars to remove all the tires.

No matter the price or type of property, always hire a real estate agent who can help ensure you know all the important steps before closing on a property!

Did you know that decluttering could be your secret weapon for better health?

Our brain interprets clutter as unfinished tasks, keeping stress hormones like cortisol on high alert. This continuous stress disrupts sleep and negatively impacts our peace of mind.

Besides the mental clarity, there’s a fascinating physical payoff: deeper breathing and reduced decision fatigue. You’ve got your nervous system to thank for that!

And here’s a bonus—an organized space might just help curb those late-night snack cravings. A tidy home could mean a healthier you.

One of the best things you can do for your health is properly filter your water if you have municipal water. Fluoride and chlorine are toxic to the body in many ways. As just a few examples:

☠️ They block iodine uptake in the thyroid, contributing to thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism.

☠️ Chlorine damages beneficial flora on the skin and in the gut and is a large contributor to eczema (which is often started or exacerbated after swimming in a chlorinated pool.)

☠️ Fluoride is a neurotoxin. The National Research Council (NRC 2006) concluded that adverse effects of high fluoride concentrations in drinking water may be of concern and that additional research is warranted. Fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, including effects on learning and memory. Fluoride crosses the placenta and may lead to permanent brain damage.

Choose your water filtration system carefully as many filter out chlorine but not many effective filter out fluoride. Reverse osmosis is a good cost effective way to get good drinking water at the sink (despite claims that it is bad because it removes beneficial minerals; water is not and should not be relied on as a main source of minerals). If possible, be sure to filter bath/shower water as well.

We have a Halo 5 whole-house filtration system installed by Stuart Services.

Are any of these things in your home? Which ones do you need help/ideas for switching to a healthier option? Here are some of my healthy faves for each one:

1) Wood cutting boards!

2) Ceramic-coated and/or stainless steel
(Home Goods has fabulous prices on both!)

3) Use pure extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, grass-fed beef tallow, butter, etc. instead! Read food labels and avoid products containing canola oil, soybean oil, “vegetable oil,” etc.

4) Tofu damages the thyroid and contributes to hormone imbalance. Opt for healthier ways to get protein—eggs, fish, beef, chicken, turkey, etc.

5) Brita Filter do not filter effectively or sufficiently. Ideally, homes with city water should have a whole-house filtration system installed. We have a 5-stage Halo system. If you can’t do that, you can get an under-the-sink RO filter system for drinking water and shower filters for bathing/showering.

6) Use parchment paper or covered baking dishes instead of aluminum foil to avoid having toxic aluminum buildup in the brain.

7) Dawn dish soap has gotta go! Dishsoaps with ethoxylated ingredients can contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a byproduct classified as a potential carcinogen. Additionally, synthetic fragrances are hormone disruptors and can trigger migraines, asthma, etc. This is the healthiest + safest dish soap available:

https://www.youngliving.com/us/en/product/young-living-thieves-dish-soap?enrollerId=1565710&sponsorId=1565710&EXID=paa2_aaa

😎 Again, synthetic fragrances disrupt hormones and contribute to migraines, asthma, etc. And they fuel insulin resistance + metabolic dysfunction as well as contribute to liver disease. Use diffusers and pure essential oils instead, like this:

https://www.youngliving.com/us/en/product/simplified-starter-collection?enrollerId=1565710&sponsorId=1565710&EXID=paa2_aaa

9) Microplastics are a major health concern. When warm/hot foods come into contact with plastic, plastic particles enter our food, then our body and our brain, contributing to many chronic diseases and overall toxicity. Use silicone, wood, or stainless steel cooking utensils instead of plastic! And don’t put hot/warm food in plastic containers!
