⚓ Ohio's story began in Marietta — and two centuries later, this riverside city is still one of the most beautifully preserved and historically significant small cities in America.

Marietta was founded in 1788 as the first permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory — the first organized city of the new United States beyond the original thirteen colonies. The people who built it were Revolutionary War veterans who surveyed and named their new home after Marie Antoinette in recognition of France's support during the war. The streets they laid out are still there. Many of the buildings from the early 19th century are still standing. History is not behind glass in Marietta — it is the sidewalk under your feet.
