Ski-in, ski-out in Canaan Valley, West Virginia. Aurora Point sits right on the slopes of Timberline Mountain Resort, so the first run of the day starts at your front door.

Inside, seven bedrooms and four king master suites, each with a two-person jacuzzi tub and windows where you can watch skiers glide past while you soak.

Dinner becomes the main event around the hibachi island, with a chef available to cook for everyone at once. A 16-foot IMAX-inspired screen drops from the ceiling for the big game, the gaming theater keeps the younger ones busy with PS5 and Xbox Series X, and the Shadow Theater usually gets the biggest laugh of the trip.

Later, the slopeside hot tub looks straight out over the valley, the sauna warms you back up, and two fireplaces face the kitchen and living room for the part of the night when nobody wants to move. Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods, mountain biking, fishing and golf are all minutes away, in every season.

Ski-in, ski-out from a private luxury estate on Deep Creek Lake, and the mountain is only half of the trip.

At Lakeview Luxe in McHenry, Maryland, the slopes at Wisp Resort start right outside the door. Come back in and the day keeps going: everyone gathers around the hibachi island with a chef on hand, the game goes up on the 16-foot theater screen, the gaming theater and Shadow Theater take over the evening, and the top-floor hot tub sits with the mountain right in front of you. The sauna is there for when you come back in from the cold.

Warm months change everything except the address. Whitewater rafting and tubing are right next door, with lake days, boating, waterfalls and hiking minutes away.

Multiple master suites mean the whole group stays under one roof and nobody gets stuck with the short straw.
