simple precautions and awareness can prevent commonplace electrical hazards around your house, and provide you with peace of mind and increased safety while also extending the life of your household electrical equipment. Here are a few tips that can come in handy in our daily lives.
1. Do not overload outlets. Overloading an electrical outlet is a common cause of electrical problems. As a rule of thumb, do not connect more than one major appliance per outlet.
2. Be careful when using power strips to add outlets, connecting too many devices that consume significant power can lead to overheating and may cause fires. Remember, adding outlets does not change the amount of power flowing through that outlet. Consider smart plugs to monitor outlet power and auto switch off and on in case of overheating.
3. Replace damaged electrical cords because they can pose serious safety and fire risk. Understand the American Wire Gauge (AWG) rating system before purchasing a power cord, especially for major appliances that consume significant power. The lower the AWG number, the thicker the cord, and the heaver the load it can carry.
4. Keep electrical devices and outlets away from water to prevent shock. Use GFCI outlets near water. Not sure which one you have, GFCI outlets have the “Reset” or “Test” buttons on them.
5. Following manufacturer’s instructions in operating any equipment can prevent issues and extend the life of appliances.
6. If one or more of the following happen repeatedly, it is time to call a qualified electrician: fuses blow up time and again, or the outlets are warm, or if the lights flicker.
