The average new car payment in America is now around $740 a month. Used is not far behind, closer to $525. For a lot of households that is the second biggest bill they have, right after rent.

Sit with that number. $740 a month is roughly $8,800 a year going toward something that loses value the second you drive it off the lot. Stretch that across the average loan, which now runs close to six years, and you can pay thousands in interest on top of the sticker price.

The alternative does not feel exciting, which is exactly why it works. You keep the paid off car a few extra years, you quietly send what would have been the payment into savings or investments instead, and you break the cycle of always owing someone for the thing in your driveway.

A car should get you to work, not become the reason you can never get ahead. Own it outright and it stops being a bill and starts being freedom.
