We want to start by recognizing everyone who put in the long hours behind the scenes to make today happen. Weekly Point of Safety: Strong Crews Look Out for One Another

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and this Thursday is World Su***de Prevention Day.

An important reminder that safety includes our mental and emotional well-being. Safety in the utility and construction industries goes beyond PPE, equipment inspections, and jobsite procedures—it also includes mental health. Long hours, demanding schedules, time away from home, and the pressure to “push through” can take a serious toll. Construction workers face an elevated risk of su***de, making it especially important to recognize when a coworker may be struggling.

During National Su***de Prevention Month, take time to check in with your crew and listen without judgment. Even during the toughest projects and darkest moments, hope and support are available. Weekly Point of Safety | Have a Plan. Practice the Plan.

With school back in session and everyone settling into their routines, now is a great time to review your home emergency exit plan. If your family doesn’t have one, set a goal to create one this week.

Start by drawing a simple map of your home showing all doors and windows. Identify two ways out of every room and choose a safe meeting place outside where everyone can gather.

Most importantly, don’t just make the plan—practice it. Review it with everyone in your household and hold a home fire drill. In an emergency, knowing exactly what to do and where to go can make all the difference.

A few minutes of planning today can help your family act quickly when every second counts.

☀️ Weekly Point of Safety: Stay Cool, Stay Safe

As we head into the last full week of August, high temperatures and humidity continue to create serious risks for anyone working outdoors or in hot environments.

This week, our focus is Heat Stress Prevention.

🔥 Stay ahead of the heat:

* Hydrate early and often. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
* Take breaks in the shade or A/C whenever possible.
* Dress for the conditions with lightweight, breathable clothing.
* Watch your coworkers. Confusion, dizziness, nausea, headache, or unusual fatigue can be signs of heat illness.

Speak up early. If you or someone around you starts feeling overheated, stop work, cool down, and get help.

⚠️ Remember: Heat exhaustion can quickly become heat stroke. Confusion, fainting, or altered behavior in extreme heat is an emergency—call 911 and begin cooling the person immediately.

Weekly Point of Safety - Safety Doesn’t Stop at the Work Zone

We’ve recently talked about distracted driving, watching for school buses as students return to school, and damage prevention. This past week, a construction worker became trapped in heavy machinery, requiring firefighters and a surgical team to work for nearly two hours to free him.

Incidents like this naturally draw our attention, especially when emergency crews are working nearby. But when you’re behind the wheel, your focus must remain on the road—slow down, follow directions, and give emergency responders the space they need.

Don’t rubberneck. Taking your eyes off the road to look at an accident can quickly create another one. Stay focused, keep moving safely, and remember: the safest way past an incident is with your eyes on the road.
