Today, we honor A. G. Gaston, a visionary entrepreneur and civil rights supporter from Demopolis, Alabama. Gaston started as a coal miner and went on to build a business empire, including the Booker T. Washington Insurance Company, Smith and Gaston Funeral Home, Gaston Motel, and Citizens Federal Savings and Loan, while using his influence to support Birmingham’s Black community. During the 1960s, he served as a key intermediary between civil rights leaders and city officials, providing Martin Luther King Jr. and others with safe lodging at the Gaston Motel, bailing King out of jail, and advocating for federal intervention after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. A pioneer in Birmingham’s Black community, Gaston exemplified the power of business to advance justice and equality.
