Remembering the legend Council Luther Pickles (1943-2016)
Luther was one of those Greenville boys that made it good. He started out working at the Florida Plywood Mill, went on to earn his accounting degree from Florida State University, became a CPA, and later served as comptroller for the Jefferson County Kennel Club for many years.
Titles never defined Luther. Relationships did. Luther handled my income tax from the time I was 18 years old. He called me to handle the sale of his personal home, then the sale of his mother's home. That is the kind of thing that happens in small towns. We grow up together. We work together. We raise families together. We help each other through the chapters of life.
Luther represented something that is becoming harder and harder to find these days - steady character, hometown loyalty, quiet intelligence, and long-term relationships built on trust instead of transactions.
And today, his legacy still continues through his widow, Barbara Pickels who served our community with the same hometown spirit and dedication. For everyone wondering how Barbara is...she is healthy, happy, well and enjoys her time at the beach and kindly has given permission for me to publicly remember Luther. Luther's children have done exceptionally well and as the old saying goes "The apple doesn't fall very far from the tree". I know he's proud!
